MIA Question

Wed Dec 26, 2001 9:45 pm

Happy holidays to everyone.

After AA, which carrier has the next biggest operations at MIA?

I was able to do some spotting there recenty off Perimeter Rd and noticed a fairly large US Airways presence. Are they the seond largest carrier from MIA?

United would be the 2nd largest carrier.
They have a sort of mini-hub at MIA, but
AA pretty much dwarfs the competition...

United is #2. Only about 30 daily departures and arrivals, but like 70% of them are on widebody jets (even the short hops to Washington are widebody). #3 is I believe Iberia Airlines. Followed by USAirways/C.C. Air (32 daily departures), Continental/Gulfstream (40ish dailies), Delta/Comair (14 daily), and LanChile/LanPeru (up to 5 daily on Saturdays). After those, the biggest Latin American carrier is probably Avianca (like 4-5 dailies) and the biggest European carrier is Air France (24 flights a week to Paris and Port-Au-Prince). Biggest Asian carrier is our only Asian carrier - El Al.

Iberia out of MIA has 10 weekly 747s to Madrid and 4 weekly A340s to Madrid. They also codeshare with AA daily on flights to Madrid and Dallas. They operate thier own A319s on about 50 weekly frequencies to Central America and Cancun. There are plans to expand MIA to add more destinations and A320s in the future. They have both FA and pilot bases in Miami and a maintence base.
