US Airports With New Runways Coming?

Wed Dec 26, 2001 9:49 pm

Can anyone tell me all the US airports that have new runways that have made it to the constructions phase?

I can think of IAH and MSP. DTW just opened up if I understand right.

Id just like to know about runways they have actually started building, not just in planning.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is expanding. After much debate and red tape the construction has begun. The new 9,000' CAT III, Group V runways 6L/24R are the first step in getting CLE up to its full potential. The runway expansion is a part of a larger renovation and construction project at CLE right now.

Lambert St. Louis Int'l is well underway with razing houses for the future 12R/30L. This runway is also going to be 9,000' long.

ATL is supposed to get a new runway. There was a lot of uproar here a few months ago because the city was about to pay 300 million dollars just for the dirt! We'll get the runway sometime though I guess.

Manchester, NH (MHT) is in the process of lengthening their longer runway (17/35) to over 9,500 feet (incl. displaced thresholds). The shorter of the two (6/24) will be the airport's only runway while the main runway is undergoing its rehab. 6/24 is now about 7,500 feet (incl. DT) and on it we handle UA 757s, US A321s, FedEx DC-10s and A300-600s, and UPS A300-600s and 757s...all daily (or nightly) visitors here.

In Denver Int'l (DEN), they're building a 6th runway. It will be 16,000ft. and 200ft. wide.

It should be complete sometime next year, I don't know the full details though.

San Francisco Int'l (SFO/KSFO) is in the process of gaining approval for a massive runway project that would, under the most drastic plan, reconfigure all four runways.

Like BA said we will have the 16,000 foot runway next year. I know that it will be at the end of the year, next year that it would be complete.

At MSP the new runway being built (17/35) is being delayed. Now the 8,000ft. runway is supposed to open in late 2004 instead of late 2003.

Also, I heard improvements to the landing systems on the two parallel runways (12R/30L & 12L/30R) have been delayed slightly until 2002.

There are plans being considered for building a second runway at San Diego's Lindbergh Field if more land becomes available at the adjacent Marine Training base. This might take place between 2010-2015. A better idea would be to select a site for a new airport altogether.

MIA's fourth runway (9,000ft?) will help relieve congestion at MIA. It will be used almost exclusively for domestic arrivals.

DFW International Airport, a new runway similar to Runway 35R/17L will be built to the west side of the airport close to runway 31L/13R & 36L/18R.

Current Runways:
1. 31L/13R
2. 36L/18R
3. 36R/18L
4. 35L/17R
5. 35C/17C
6. 35R/17L
7. 31R/13L

New Runway:
The 8th Runway will have to get a number both ends.

So you see current runway up top.. #2 & #3 needs to change.

After New Runway is completed and ready for use...

1. 31L/13R
2. 36L/18R (New Runway)
3. 36C/18C
4. 36R/18L
5. 35L/17R
6. 35C/17C
7. 35R/17L
8. 31R/13L

On that project for the 8th runway to be built, I dont know exactly how the DFW Apt Director Jeff Fegan will make it new runway as.
