New Carrier: Arequipeña De Aviacion.

Fri Dec 28, 2001 9:09 am

Hi:

It's probable that the peruvian market see a new airline: Arequipeña de Aviacion. This new airline wants to start from a new base, located in Arequipa the second o third city in Peru, and pretends to developed a regional Hub in AQP, not in Lima as the others peruvian airlines.

Arequipeña de Aviación pretends to fly with a Fokker F.28 to Lima and Cuzco. Then in another stage the airline would expand the flights to another peruvian cities like Trujillo, Tacna, Iquitos, Chiclayo. And in a third stage the airline would to fly to some international destination like, La Paz, Arica, Iquique, Salta and Tucuman.

Arequipeña, will be the first airline in develop a network from a regional hub. It's profitable this airline in a market like Peru?

Would flights to MIA be possible in the future? Obviously not with F28s, but if they are succsesful, hopefully. MIA could really use service to cities in Peru other than LIM, like IQT.

I remember when AeroPeru went out of business a few years ago. Other than LanPeru, are there any other airlines in Peru with a comprehensive regional network that would be in direct competition with this new airline?

Hi:

Lan Peru would be the number one airline in Peru, although Aero Continente is the major, but the type of services offered by Lan Peru is better than Aero Continente. Also Lan Peru will have the newest fleet in the country with the newest A320.
So I think that Arequipeña will not a great competition but depends of the fares.

Hi RJ_Delta;

Well I'm happy to see a new Latin Airliner starting up.

"It's profitable this airline in a market like Peru?"
Well I don't know much about recent facts of these region; pax. and cargo etc. But with an eye on the future plans of Peruvian aviation (there are some big plans of a new airport (hub) in Lima in 2010? What will handle flights from Europe/USA to South America) they maybe have thought, organize good connections in Peru and to start up a network of a regional hub with service of a new airliner. If the future new hub in Lima will work they will have a profit on that!

The problem like always will be the money! The start with an F-28 will be good, but to grow they must have more airplanes in the near future maybe F-50, Dash-8 or ATR-42’s.

After "fujimori" (who at the end has made a big mess of the Peruvian economy) Peru will have a bright future ahead, especially with the new president who will try to bring new investors and also stimulate tourism in Peru again. So Arequipeña will have good changes if they have a management that will work efficiently and make the best choices at the right time.

Saludos/regards

The F28 is a mark -4000, coming from Horizon as far as I know. No idea if additional ones have been optioned. Interesting though, the F28 has prooven to be very popular among up-starts, mainly because a big chunk is currently available including Horizon Air-, SAS Communter- and Air Canada Region- frames.
