Martinair Status?

Fri Dec 28, 2001 12:13 pm

Can anybody update the financial status of
MARTINAIR HOLLAND? Have heard for a few months
now that they having serious cash problems, but heard
recently that the situation may be reaching critical
level and may result in shut down of airline?? or
shutdown of all pax service with operations to
be Cargo only. Anybody know any further updates?
One possible scenario of MARTINAIR shutting down
would be a Double Daily MIA/AMS NWA/KLM trip to be started.
I know that NWA is running nearly full on a daily
basis on this trip.

I have heard nothing about Martinair shutting down. I do know loads on thier MIA flights have been very well as of late (they recently re-started the 5th weekly MIA-AMS which was pulled after 9/11; they have 10 flights a week out of MIA; five to AMS plus 5th freedom to AUA 3x a week and SJC 2x a week). I did hear some rumours a while back about them moving thier MIA-AMS service to FLL-AMS when KLM/NW, but Martinair realesed a statement stating they would remain at MIA, were they are popular. Your right about the NW57/58, though. That plane is going out packed, though, for the winter, it is not running on Tuesday and Wednesday. It goes back to daily April 4th. I have wondered, other than MIA and MCO, do they serve other US/Canadian destinations? Are they still at OAK? YVR? YYC?

Nobody in Europe has any comments or insite on
Martinair? I thought this would be good fodder
for a lively discussion...

I'm surprised, no comments? I would love to hear more on Martinair's status, I didn't think they were in trouble.

AFAIK they're hanging in there. Being a smaller airline they're obviously closer to the margin than the larger boys in pure numbers, but a 10% loss in revenue for them is less in USD than it is for the big boys also.
They're also very strong in cargo, which has probably increased some now that US cargo aircraft have been federalised for transporting cargo in support of the operations in Afghanistan.
They don't have many US destinations either, and that is the hardest hit market.
Given that it is winter right now the charter market is down as a whole, but that is a seasonal thing and quite normal for them (it happens every year, and they count on that).
I wish I were flying

What are there US destinations? MCO, MIA, and what else? Like I said before, the MIA-AMS flights are going out packed this winter. Don't know about MCO-AMS. Also, does MP have premium class cabins on thier 763s?

Martinair is slightly loss making (not much) However, they decided to cut costs drastically (even before September 11th). Unfortunately the intergration into the KLM Group is still blocked by the EU Commission.

For info on destinations please go to their website http://www.martinair.com/. Note that most US destinations are only served by cargo flights.

MP suspended their flights to OAK,LAX and EWR long time ago, YVR,YYC and YYZ only operates in summer season

MCO and MIA are the only US (pax) destinations of MP today. with flt nrs MP 631/632 AMS-MCO-AMS, MP 635 AMS-MCO-SJO-AMS, MP 645 AMS-MIA-SJO-AMS and MP 647 AMS-MIA-AUA-MIA-AMS.

MP has already stopped flying pax with their 747's, they are only been used for cargo today

What about their Charter activities in the Meditirranian?? And the scheduled flights to the Caribbean?? Do they have problems there??

I have some idea, why does MP convert their cargo routes to SYD into a pax-route to SYD (or maybe MEL too)?? Via SIN or KUL?? Since KLM suspended their SYD flights, there are no airlines operating from Holland to Australia, and that's a real pity. And that for Schiphol, Europe's forth largest Airport. Maybe MP can get some cash out of that  Wink/being sarcastic

i made a little mistake in that MSG, here is the rectification:

"MCO and MIA are the only US (pax) destinations of MP today. with flt nrs MP 631/632 AMS-MCO-AMS, MP 635 AMS-MCO-SJO-MCO-AMS, MP 645 AMS-MIA-SJO-MIA-AMS and MP 647 AMS-MIA-AUA-MIA-AMS."

I know they still fly 3 times a week to San Jose Costa Rica with a 763, and come Saturdays with a cargo run on a 742 (mostly to pick up flowers)... From what I hear they are nothing special but good prices... The 763 stops in Miami on it's way and comes down here (02:45hr flight) with an average of 50-60 pax. Don't know how profitable that is. Condor used to come here too via Miami, but they dropped us =(....

KL713, LAX still served as cargo destination, just as SEA and ATL.

As for SYD flights. They don't have the traffic rights and if you've been on a scheduled MP flight you know that you can't do this to passengers (their seat pitch is awful).

A340-313X, do you mean LTU instead of Condor? LTU flew DUS-MIA-SJC until about a year or so ago. They dropped the MIA-SJC sector apparently because they lost thier rights to fly to Costa Rica and were unable to get them back.

Nope, I mean Condor... They left after high season last year and won't come back no more... They tried different stops on this route such as Cancun, Orlando, Santo Domingo and eventually packed up their stuff and left. British Airways also came for a while with a 772, not quite sure via what but they also ceased that flight a short while after. LTU used to come with an A330 but like you said somehow lost their rights... Iberia and Martinair are the only regular European airlines visiting us now..

Regards...

A340-313X, thanks for the info. The reason I ask is because I never remember Condor flying to MIA. They do fly FRA-FLL every Saturday though. Was it FRA-FLL-SJO? Thanks.

Actually now you mention it, it wasn't Miami... I actually think it was Orlando, I'm pretty sure it wasn't FLL... Hmmm, let me think here.....

the traffic rights OK...that's true.....for the horrible seats also...(been there done that a few years ago...) All they have to do is improve their seats a little bit more, before they losing more pax.....
