What's With DEN Being Referred To As DIA

Sat Dec 29, 2001 5:00 pm

There are even freeway signs that state "DIA" instead of "DEN". Denver Intl is the only airport I can think of that is referred to as a different airport code. Are there other instances of this?

"DIA" is the accepted name for the airport here in Denver by the majority of the population (most of which know nothing of airport codes) as it does not have another name (such as "O'Hare" or "La Guardia"). I refer to it as "Denver International," "The Airport," or "DEN." I can't stand "DIA" and always correct people when I hear it.

Tsully, I know where it comes from but it's incorrect.

Flyf15, I'm glad to see it pisses someone else off. I've even seen a luggage tag from an airline that showed "DIA", I couldn't believe it!

There are other airports like Inchon or Manila, usually referred as IIA and NAIA. You know there are so many people that call Hong Kong international as "CLK", which is not official. I think we don't have to mind.

Wasn't Stapleton DEN and Denver International replaced it they kept the DIA tags?

Not true, there are many other airports that use such acronyms. MCI comes to mind, more people refer to MCI as "KCI"...

Stapleton and Denver International Airport both shared DEN as the ICAO Airport code.....However everyone called Stapleton "Stapleton" and keeping with the airport name game they became lazy, why say Denver International Airport day in day out, when DIA is easy....I hate the DIA expression myself but hey it works for most people....

LAX is about one of the few airports called by its code...Los Angeles Internation Airport is a bit verbose....Seattle Tacoma International Airport is SeaTac to most not SEA....Its just part of the local sayings....May not like it but hey you dont gotta...Ry

all residents of cities come up with names for their airport... official or unofficial

Chicago... "O'Hare" "Midway"
Seattle... "Sea-Tac"
Los Angeles "LAX"
San Francisco "SFO"
Orlando "McCoy"
Dallas "Love"
Denver "DIA"

you get the point... people of Denver just happened to choose a 3-letter acronym for their name... just like a code

B737-112: I know it's incorrect; I thought you meant you didn't know from where the acronym came.

In CA, many of us (even non-aviation buffs) refer to SFO as "SFO". On the other hand, I know of no one who calls San Diego "SAN".

I don't think anyone calls John F. Kennedy by its full name. Instead, I hear "JFK" and “Kennedy”.

I think it all comes down to how simplistic the name is to say. If it rolls off the tongue quickly and effortlessly, perhaps people will call it by its name. And if not, I guess folks just get creative with what they use to describe it.

A similar situation comes to mind in Tampa. They call it TIA. Even on the Expressway signage.

Philadelphia generally says PHL or Philly International. PIA isn't said by the networks b/c that's Peoria...

In San Francisco, we call the airport "G-d-mnit" because of the delays. Everybody flies standby, meaning when it's all said and done we end up standing there waving "bye!"

DEN refers to the city code and DIA the airport code. Someone mentioned O'Hare and MCO, both named after people, as is LGA and JFK. The TIA mentioned to me doesn't make any sense to me-does it stand for Tampa International? Because as all here know TPA is the city code.

During much of the development of the new Denver Airport it was refered to by the Denver government and in the media as DIA and it stuck.

I remember the info on Austin's new airport at Bergstrom was refered to as BIA (Bergstrom International Airport). The City of Tucson refers to Tucson International (TUS) as TIA on the website.

Remember they are just colloquial expressions and don't get worked up over them.

Ever heard of Abbreviations?

Honestly I think it would sound a little wierd for someone to say to the taxi driver "Take me to DEN." It just doesn't sound right.

I say "Denver Airport" most of the time, sometimes "Denver Int'l" and sometimes "Denver Int'l Airport" and sometimes "DIA".

It really isn't a big deal. Its just the initials of the airport instead of saying "Denver International Airport" which is long.

Regards.

Rydawg82:
I think a three letter code like DEN is an IATA code. The ICAO has always four letters. It would be KDEN for Denver I guess.
LAX is KLAX,
SFO is KSFO,
JFK is KJFK,
ZRH is LSZH,
LHR is EGLL,
BSL is LFSB, etc.......
Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back

Around DC everyone calls IAD, Dulles, not Dulles International Airport, it does not really compare to DIA and DEN, but I wanted to point it out....

I have seen signs on DEN airport property that say DIA on it.

No one says "Dallas/Ft.Worth International Airport" in Dallas. We just refer to it as "DFW" just like the airport code.

SEA is named "Sea-Tac" because it's in the city of Sea-Tac...in between Seattle, and Tacoma.

When the new Denver airport was opened it was DIA because Stapleton was "DEN" After they switched, DIA became DEN. Same deal with HKG. When CLK was opened and Kai Tak was closed, the HKG went to the new one (I still donno how to spell it.)

I like the name for Detroit...Cluster fu_k...that's a fitting name!

People in Portland routinely refer to the airport as PDX... I've even known people to call the whole city PDX

I like it better. Let's go to the DEN sounds great. DIA is not so great. So that must be where photographer DIASpotter got his name. I always wondered.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) predates the city of SeaTac by close to forty years. The city was named for the airport, not the airport fo the city.
