I never understood the need for this route. There are very ltd economic and VFR ties betw Aus/NZ and Argentina.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

TG992,

Yes the loads are bad. However with the internal problems that Argentina is facing at the moment, and a complete lack of any tourist advertising on Aerolineas / Argentine governments behalf it's not surprising.

I want to go skiing in Portillo (Chile) next year 2002, and was wondering the best routing.

Cheers,

mb

A kinda neat Star Alliance routing would be NZ SYD-AKL-PPT, and LA PPT-SCL. Transfer to Portillo would be about USD165.

I have flown with KLM a couple of times from South America to Amsterdam on new year's eve. Generally, flights on the 29, 30th Dec and 01, 02 Jan are packed, but flights on the 31st are almost empty. I can't imagine very many Latin Americans would be willing to make a long trip on the 31st of Dec as everybody who possibly can tries to see the new year in with their family.

Have you checked the news in the last 2 weeks??? Argentina isnt doing so well, to put it very lightly...

The fact that anyone has enough money (or access to it) to fly is incredible.

With the current situation in Argentina they are headed for turbulent skies. From what I've heard at least the MIA seems to be doing ok and in Feb it will go to 5 times a week.

Hi AeroArgentina,

I work for an airline, and the computer system has details of the loadings for all airline's flights passing through New Zealand.

Well keep us all informed about AR's New Zealand loads cause I know that this flight used to be a big money maker for AR. Things are bad in Argentina but it might also be because it is the 31st. No one really wants to fly on the 31st. Thanks again.

TG: that's no star alliance routing - Lan Chile is in oneworld.

I did that routing in January 2001 (last year now). MEL-AKL on Qantas, AKL-PPT on Air Tahiti Nui (though as their plane was grounded we ended up on a NZ 763) then Lan Chile to Easter Island (a must-do stopover) then finally to SCL.

However there are rumours of one-stop Lan Chile to Sdney in the near future...

Aerolineas does a poor job in marketing its AKL flights throught South-America. It is true the current domestic economy doesn´t help a lot, but the load factors could be much higher if AR had stronger code-sharing agreements and a more "hub-minded" strategy. Convenient conections to Brazil, a partnership with TAM / Lan Chile and better passenger accessibility through Ezeiza Airport, for example, would be a great way to start!

I think it's because of the current economic and social crisis in Argentina, which lowered the demands for this route.

Also, does Qantas still codeshare with Aerolineas Argentinas for EZE-AKL?

By the way, have a really great 2002, bud. And I'm glad you like the card I mailed you  Smile

What have QF's loads been like on their SYD-AKL-EZE flight?
When I worked at Air NZ in June July last year 2001 their loads were always really good QF that is they use a 394 seat B744 on this flight currently 3x weekly back to 2 in March.

MIA loads are doing well, I am sure, because Miami has huge polticial and economic ties to Argentina. Economic crisis or no economic crisis, those ties won't break, so traffic reamains strong on AR, UA, and AA. SYD/AKL is a different, story, however.

Skiing in Portillo? Great.

And the ideal route for that would be SYD/AKL-PPT in Qantas, and then PPT-IPC-SCL in LanChile. All in OneWorld.

And who can tell me more about that one-stop LanChile SCL-SYD route?

Help out the argentine econ and go skiing in Las Lenas. I went there and it was fun, the altitude of the mountains is so high that there are no trees!

Also, lets not forget that AR is a horrible airline! Why would people fly them when they can fly Qantas?

What have QF's loads been like on their SYD-AKL-EZE flight?

I'm wondering as well, especially QF has added extra flight on SYD-AKL-EZE after the temporary collapse of AR.

Guys,

What would be the 'star' routing to Chile / Argentina from SYD?

Which carriers?

Cheers,

TG992,

I thought that would be the case. That's a long routing, although the miles would be worth it and I wouldn't mind a stop over in LA to visit friends.

Maybe I should just go skiing in NZ after all?

I really wanted to go to Portillo though.

Cheers,

mb

Actually, Star Alliance wise, the quickest (and most comfortable; since MIA-EZE is UA's only EZE route using a 777) way to Argentina, time wise (and I think distance too) is using all UA on SYD-LAX-MIA-EZE. The most convienent way is SYD-SFO-MIA-EZE, because SFO-MIA-EZE is all the same flight number and same aircraft (777-200).

Okay, simply put, you have five choices on Star Alliance SYD-EZE:

NZ14 SYD-LAX (744)
UA823 LAX-ORD (320)
UA823 ORD-EZE (763)
TOTAL TIME: 38h10m

UA862 SYD-SFO (744)
UA855 SFO-MIA-EZE (772)
TOTAL TIME: 33h25m (QUICKEST CONNECTION WISE)

UA862 SYD-SFO (744)
UA862 SFO-ORD (752)
UA823 ORD-EZE (763)
TOTAL TIME: 34h30m

UA816 SYD-LAX (744)
UA816 LAX-JFK (762)
UA979 JFK-EZE (763)
TOTAL TIME: 33h00m (QUICKEST TIME WISE)

UA816 SYD-LAX (744)
UA823 LAX-ORD (320)
UA823 ORD-EZE (763)
TOTAL TIME: 33h30m

But only one choice on EZE-SYD, and it's not a fun one:

UA975 EZE-JFK (763)
UA863 JFK-SFO (762)
UA863 SFO-SYD (744)
TOTAL TIME: 44h55m

Not fun at all. It is the ONLY Star Alliance routing they give you.
