Name TWO Airlines You Would Like To See Merge...

Tue Jan 01, 2002 5:04 am

The big European carriers think the future for Europe is three airlines....
Just the three major carriers, and likely a hub and spoke network similar to the US.

If this is going to happen who do you think should merge with LH, AF or BA???

I think BA/KLM would be great...

Anyone else???

BA and jetBlue/Southwest
That way jetBlue/Southwest could show BA the way to fly cheaply!

In reality...
BA and LH would be great. There fleet is also very similar. BA could help LH do smaller flights and LH could help BA do uhhhh..... Confused

Whatever the current alliances are.

Air France/Alitalia/British European/CSA
BA/Iberia/Swissair (?)/Finnair/Aer Lingus
LH/British Midland/Austrian Group/etc.
KLM and ???

I think Europe would do fine with four main groups, plus the likes of EasyJet and Ryanair.

HlywdCatft: We will have a world of 2 or 3 airlines anyway if they go out of business. Isn't it better for them to merge than to let that happen?

AirTran and America West

With two powerful hubs in Phoenix and Atlanta, and smaller ones in Columbus and Las Vegas, it could be a pretty strong airline.

One problem mfricke: Aircraft compatibility.

America-Tran would have the-
-B737-200/300
-Airbus A318/319/320
-Boeing 717
-DC9
-B757

I don't think AirTran would do good in any merger. I've looked at just about every possibility(FL+F9, B6, N7, HP, TZ, NJ, etc.)

Hi:

My decision would be:

DELTA AIR LINES and CONTINENTAL AIRLINES.

Of course with this name: Delta.

Best regards,

If Air Canada is ever forced into a corner and has to consider putting itself up for sale, seeking bankruptcy or being re-nationalised, my preference would be for an AC/LH deal, with AC as Lufthansa's North American sub-brand.

Reasons:

- Good fleet commonality (for swapping aircraft to meet fluctuations in demand)

- An existing commercial relationship (LH having expressed interest in buying a stake in AC at one point)

- Relatively little route or hub overlap

- Better odds of AC surviving as a brand name and keeping its overseas network intact than under a deal with UA, NW or another U.S. carrier.

i could imagine LH buying Austrian Airlines.
Oh, and they could found a new Airline for Belgium if DAT fails  Smile
I doubt that KLM will merge, as they are the "royal dutch airline", and they are maybe the same for the netherlands what the Swissair was(and what Swiss Air Lines will be) for Switzerland.

But those countries have a very small home market:
The Netherlands have 15.000.000 inhabitans, Switzerland only 7.000.000 ! Compare this with 59.000.000 people living in the UK or 83.000.000 in Germany !! It would be easier if the Swiss Air Lines and AUA merge with LH as they would have a market of nearly 100.000.000 People together(Most people in Switzerland speak German, about 70% i think). But Switzerland wants to independent from everything and everyone, so they will always have their "own" airline  Smile

I thought LH already had a stake in Austrian?????
They certainly held a stake in Lauda....
And im pretty sure they have a hlding in Austrian... something to look into.

I'm combining more than two, but let's merge DAT (Sabena, whatever) Alitalia, Aerolineas Argentina, America West, Swissair and US Airways....why not create one big loser, poorely managed, destined-for-bankruptcyairline to keep the pressure off of the others????

And on the US front, DL and CO would make me happy, but DL and AS would also suffice, giving DL a West Coast presence.

oh and LH & Virgin atlantic would also be great...

2 airlines which use only 4-engined planes for transatlantic flights, competing with BA & AF, both using the 2-engined 777 - i think many people who don't know much about aviation feel saver on a 4-engined plane than on a 2-engined plane  Smile

United and Continental, if combined, would be the most powerful airline ever, with hub-airports in the most important and strategically located cities in the US. What an increadible dream..... I would paint my bedroom walls with their route network system! =) =) =)

I think Indian Airlines (IC) and Air India(AI) should be merged. That would have happened if the jerks in the Parliament had understood the airline business and kept their brains to themselves!

Workinf together, these 2 could have turned the screws on competitors like EK and BA.

I think ATA and Airtran would be a good fit. Airtran would have access to larger aircraft and open them up to the west coast. ATA would gain the 717 and service to cities like Des Moines and Indy could move to jet service.

United is in misery. Consistently has some of the worst airline management, late, high complaints, disgruntled employees. Has always been the ??? of the majors as what is the culture...They should be ruling the sky's but will always fall all over themselves and take years to dig out again.....They should merge with anyone that can run an airline in good times and bad. Qantas and United
Delta and Qantas
Delta and Aeroflot
Aeroflot and United
United and Delta
Lufthansa and Aeroflot
Lufthansa and Qantas

That's a lot of airline listed there, I think it would be fun to see how all of these would turn out.

BMI and Aer Lingus
Same destinations, aircraft (73's A32's A330)
Same part of the world
Loads of LHR Slots - DUB-LHR every 30 minutes!

Portugalia, Air Portugal, Spanair and Air Europa.
Proper competition for Iberia

Delta and Alaskan

Northwest and Jet Blue

Virgin and Air France
Similar fleet, Loads of LHR slots.

QF/AA and since they have similiar fleets apart from 747's and the 777's. but they share teh 737 aren't they for seasonal use?
Emirates and Gulf would be good
UA buys AN so at least some more foreign support for AN, well Air NZ can go off with QF. DJ and SN.

Alaska Airlines and US Airways

East coast and West coast would be covered and then US Airways could develop and start service to Asia and Hawaii from one of the major gate ways on the West coast.

Alaska could feed US Airways on transcontinental flights......

might not make sense, but seems fitting at a first glimpse:

Continental/Alaska Airlines
Northwest/America West

additionally, i´m pretty sure that if consolidation will come to Europe`, Lufthansa will take a very, very close look at merging with SAS and/or Austrian.

bmi and virgin would be nice as well, but will never happen, imho.

what about Spanair and Air Europa???
Air Dolomiti and Air One?
Deutsche BA and LTU?

cheers

UA and CO...great route structure...if you put one route map over the others, nothing overlaps...and talk about the fleet...absolutely the best combo...but that will never happen. Sad
