New BMI Aircraft?

Tue Jan 01, 2002 9:14 am

Once BMI (British Midland) was considering the 717/A318. Has anyone heard anything about this?

I haven't heard anything on this for a while. MDD/Boeing made a strong pitch to BMI to replace the F100/F70 fleet with the 717.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

bmi has talked recently about moving its Fokker fleet on to someone else, maybe the scrapman...
But what they want to replace it with i dont know...

Did anyone hear the rumour that bmi was going to become a lo-cost operator...???

if BMI has the money in the near future and decides to buy a replacement I think they would go with the a318s instead of the 717s as they are cheaper and they already have a320s,etc......what do u think?

Is the A318 really cheaper?

AAmd11

It's low-cost as in minimising their operating costs and not as in £5 fares!

BMI's F70s (3) will go to KLM Cityhopper. What will happen with the F100s (6) is unknown. KLM is looking for more Fokkers, so maybe they can go there???

I think you have to consider what BMI was thinking of when it talked about replacing Fokkers with 717s or A318s, and whether the situation has perhaps changed somewhat now.

The Fokker 70s may be going to KLMC (is this confirmed yet?), but there's three more A320s coming which may go straight into store, and between four and six A321s parked at the moment, so extra capacity obviously isn't an issue. Furthermore, the East Mids operation which isn't hugely profitable and is where the Fokkers predominate may well come under pressure if Go launch competitive routes next spring.

I think the likelihood is downsizing to Embraers, and in any case, IF new equipment is needed for regional operations its more likely to come from that source now, rather than from Boeing or Airbus.

The F70's have been confirmed to go. No news yet about the F100s.

They have been persistent rumours of bmi operating MAN-DUB and MAN-CDG routes; I don't think ERJ145s will do for those routes  Wink/being sarcastic

Could be Alpi Eagles a customer for the bmi Fokk100? I've heard they're trying to increase their fleet with 3/5 more aircraft (today they own 8 Fokk100).

Any ideas what aircraft BMI will use on the GLA- Copenhagen route if the Fokkers go ?

I'm not privvy to the figures at the moment, but MAN-CDG might sustain a 735, MAN-DUB maybe the same (are they really going to go up against EI and Ryanair on that route?). If all else fails, there's always that spare A330 sat at MAN! Big grin

EDI-CPH? Well... Who knows, but its hardly a "core" route for BMI, is it? And who's talking about the F100s going soon anyway - first I've heard about it.

The MAN-DUB rumour is doing the rounds in case EI go belly-up!

I guess bmi will downgrade most Fokker 70 routes to ERJ145s. They have done so on the DUS-MAN route and might do it on the remaining Fokker 70 routes, concentrating on high yield passengers with a 50 seater.

Which leaves the question - where do the Fokker 70 operate at the moment ? DUS-MAN has changed to a ERJ145, CDG-STN to a LH Cityline CR7 (op to LHR now).

BD were so close to launching MAN DUB three years ago when ryanair cut back services to daily. They have also looked at BHX DUB in the past. They have experience at beating competition.

BD are performing very poorly on international routes at present, with the lowest load factors in the AEA statistics (excluding Adria), and from personal experience very low business class carryings.

Was the Star livery A332 used on the Heathrow-Belfast services over the Christmas period as rumoured?
