American's Future Fleet Plans

Thu Jan 03, 2002 1:46 am

I was just wondering what American's plans are for the future. Will they keep all 100+ MD-80's from TWA? Are they gonna get rid of TWA's Pratt-Powered 757's??? I know they are not planning to get more 717 and I believe they are getting rid of the 717 but when? Does anyone have any answers???

American 757s powered with RR RB211-535 engines..Maybe they will not keep any Pratts powered 757s, and B737s will replace both 727s & MD80s.

The TWA 757s and 767s are both to be replaced i believe, they are all PW powered and the 767s were on order to replace the TWA 767s (15 were ordered but im not sure where that order stands these days with 9-11 etc.)
Im not sure when the TWA 757s are to be replaced... i dont think there was an order to replace em.... maybe they'll just be reitred early.... without replacement until replacements are needed to fill the capacity gap.

I've seen several TWA B757-200s listed on Speednews as available for sale/lease by their owners;

N719TW and N720TW are listed as being available for sale/lease now by Aviation Capital.

I would think American will phase out the remaining TWA B757-200 as further B757-200/B737-800 aircraft are delivered to facilitate this.

While they may have a different engine and different interior/exit layout to AA's 757s, these aircraft will still have lower operating costs than a 727, for example. So I think the ex-TWA 757s will only go once all the older 727 aircraft have gone.

AA Tenative Fleet Plans:

727: 31 remain, 3 more going out on 1/7/02. Retiring approx. 8 at the end of each month. Last flight on May 1st.

737-800: 77 in fleet, no more delivered until 2003. 2002 deliveries deferred, 15 of those to Qantas.

757-200: 117 in fleet, 6 more coming in 2002

767-200: Still going strong

767-300: Order for 15 more (to replace TWA PW 763's) deferred until at least 2003. (A total currently of 78 762's & 763's in fleet)

777-200: 40 in fleet, 3 more coming in 2002, remaining 4 deferred until at least 2003

F-100's: 74 in fleet, still going strong

MD-80's: 259 in fleet, all ex-Reno a/c have been retired. Prior to Sept, first MD-80 was to tenatively be retired in 2004, (this may have changed, later if anything 2006+) (Eventual replacement 737NG's 400+ options on this type)

A300's: 34 in fleet, still going strong.

MD-11's: last 4 were retired back in Oct. 2 still parked at AFW.

Former TWA aircraft:
717's: 30 in fleet, many rumors circulating, still definetely here at least for the short-term (First half 2002)

757's: 27 PW powered, staying in fleet for time being.

767-200's: all retired back in April

767-300's: 9 PW powerd, still flying out of STL for the short term. Eventually to be replaced by AA GE-powered 763's (defered order previously mentiond)

MD-80's: 103 in fleet, some being bought off lease by AA, some (few) being returned to lessors, most staying in fleet.

USairways, since MIA-PHL is a high-density route, you will probably see 752s replace the 72S. The morning flight will remain a 738.
