Runways For Only Take Off Or Landing

Thu Jan 03, 2002 12:11 pm

Why are some runways used exclusively for take-offs or landings? and are there differences between the two?

The one that best comes to mind is the 3rd (non parallel) runway at Frankfurt, whcih is used for takeoffs only. Also at London Heathrow, I think that 9L is exclusively used for landings and 9R exclusively for take-offs.

Why is this?

Runway 18 at FRA is used only for takeoffs due to noise and obstructions.

The westerly runways at LHR are alternated for takeoffs and landings...ie: landings on one in the morning and takeoffs in the afternoons and evenings....also for noise considerations.

It depends on a lot of reasons, weather conditions, access to terminals, noise and enviroment conditions, and others.

Many general aviation airports use only one direction for landings/takeoffs (for example Courchevel) due to obstructions.

at KCLE: with rare exceptions:
Runway 28 inbound only (bad weather ILS)
Runway 10 inbound only (summer evenings)
obviously not at the same time.

Runway 10/28 is usually used as a taxiway for departures on Rwy 24L/24R. Rarely if ever do you see a small aircraft depart on Runway 28; I have seen a single UPS DC-8 departure from Runway 10, simply because of rare conditions: 1--the wind was calm, 2--the DC-8 was not fully loaded that day, 3--the UPS ramp is adjacent to the runup for Runway 10.

The new fourth, currently under construction (mid/late 2003 completion), MIA runway will be used exclusively for take-offs. It is easier to run things and in the end of it, often more efficent. Have others have pointed out, various other restrictions may apply in certain cases, such as FRA.

At DTW

Runway 21L/3R is used primarily for landing, with an occassional take off here or there.

21/3C is the main take off runway, but during peak landing times it is used for landing too.

21R/3L or maybe I should say 22L/4R now is used for both. It is the longest runway, the only runway that the 747s use for take offs now. It is used by other ac for takeoffs during peak periods and probably will even more so with the opening of 22R/4L.

22R/4L looks like the landing runway during peak times.

Much like Atlanta, L.A. and Dallas, the other airports with 4 parallel runways, Detroit will use the outer mainly for landing and inner for takeoffs.

AT you're right about runway 9L at Heathrow. This runway cannot be used for take-offs due to agreements with local residents over noise abatement.
