Why Long Waits On The Tarmac

Fri Jan 04, 2002 12:36 pm

After seeing what happened in ATL the last two days and how people had to wait on their planes for hours much like what happened in DTW a while back I have to ask the question of why the plane can't be unloaded? I understand that it can't get to the gate because of lack of workers or another plane is delayed there, but what is so hard about using stairs and at least let the people wait in the terminal and get the luggage later. I can't imagine sitting for that long. Why keep the plane on and let it waste fuel. Once the people go off it can be towed on no power later. It is amazing that this happens in my opinion, just let the people walk off and get on a bus or walk to the gate. I would if I had to wait that long even in the cold and snow.

Well, they probably turned the APU on if they were waiting for that long, but keep in mind all flights must be kept 5 miles apart, according to the FAA (correct me if I'm wrong). That is pretty stupid though- waiting for hours inside the plane. Should have just cancelled the flight altogether.

As for the unloading, it would take the passengers a long time to get off, go back to the gate, get their luggage, get back on, get settled,... by that time you could have been in the air already if the passengers hadn't deboarded. That's why many major companies charter or even own their own transports. They can make decisions and divert if the weather or traffic isn't good.

You can only fit so many people into a building before it turns into a fire hazard.
