Would You Honestly Pay More For Improved Y Class?

Sat Jan 05, 2002 10:23 pm

Note: I am interrupting my Religious Education Coursework on Abortion for this!

With some airlines like EVA Air and British Airways plc offering an improved Y Class service with around 38" seat pitch, would you honestly pay more for such space or would you keep complaining at the airlines?

Personally, I always hear these stories of cramped space in Y Class on airlines where a Y Class+ is offerred. I think it's a little hypocritical of those people as (hypocritical is a strong word but I don't mean it so harshly) they should understand that the airline industry is a harsh industry where every cent / penny counts and therefore removing 5 rows of cattle class, no matter what the yield is, does affect airline profitability.

In the case of Singapore Airlines, I have told them constantly to increase seat pitch in Y class to at least their 777 standard 33", however I assume that about 2 or 3 rows of Y Class seats would have to be removed from a Megatop which understandably reduces revenue and therefore profit. However then one looks at airlines like Malaysian, Thai and American (International), and see that they can do it, why can't others.

Oh well, back to the sanctity of life. I look forward to the comments!

Me, no. But if I imagine being a business traveller sitting on a FRA-JFK flight directly beside a leisure traveller, me having paid 2000 EUR, my neighbour having paid 200 EUR, I´d sure wonder why I don´t get a better service than he does.

Hi

I think that Economy plus products are marketed at people that would like to be able to fly club but don't have the money. I also think that a lot of people who have bought seats in Y+ class cabins are going to be very unhappy when they fly. Its also a shame that its come to this when 10 years ago 34" was normal pitch in
economy.

Singapore Air good luck with your RS work.

No I wouldn't.

As long as I remain unable to afford Business class, I will continue to spend as little as possible on airfares.

As soon as I can afford better, I will bypass premium Economy & fly Business or First.

With premium economy, you are only really paying for extra leg-space; as I don't have very long legs, legroom doesn't really bother me.

Depends on the flight, price.
Just like...if i'm someone who could pay for the air-tickets and if i need to pay an extra (Say 50 US bucks) to fly HKG-TPE, no way i won't.If you say HKG-DPS yeh i will.
But for HKG-LAX i'd rather pay for business class if i can affrod the fare. Why?It all depends. Some people might like to give an additional fee to get a slightly better seat and a little more legroom.Just like i'd fly J on HKG - BKK because the route is very short, but for long - haul routes i'd like to fly first.Just like the premium economy, people might want to save the fees to get a better seat, or people might want to fly Premium economy on very long - haul routes, but get sticked to normal economy on shory haul routes.

Overall, not many airlines offer the premium ecnomy - at least not the airlines i use to fly.

Best Regards

It all depends on the additional price..... (and also my bank account Big grin)

If the price is right, even on short haul flights, I don't mind paying a bit more to get more leg room (I'm 182 cm tall).

At the moment I can't afford to fly on Business/First Class, so Premium Economy seems to be the ideal choice.

But then again, it all depends.....

Yes I would if I can be sure I get my moneys worth, that is, at least 5-10" more legroom. I am 190 cm (equalling 6'2, I believe), so any bloody inch counts! Pay more for improved service, whatever that is, no way, never ever! I'll leave that to the event flyers to discuss.
Fortunately I earn so many Star Alliance bonus miles (currently 440,000 bonus miles to spend, and that's not a typo!), that I can afford to fly Business and sometimes even first on my holiday trips.
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

I think its false - to some extent - that because you paid more than your seatmate that you should be entitled to better service or more amenities.

Price disparities aside, your seatmate planned in advance for a cheaper ticket where as you, a last minute traveler, must accept the economies that dictate that the later you wait to purchase a ticket the more valuable the seat becomes for the airline.

Last minute travelers must either accept the liberties they have to be flexible with their last minute flying or purchase in advance to lock in times and lower rates.

A large proportion of the 'reason' for flying in a premium cabin is the exclusivity - it pampers the ego of those to whom it matters.

That's why, a lot of passengers prefer airlines with small (less than 40) premium cabins - it means a more personal service and more exclusiveness.

Economy+ products do not offer this level of exclusivity. Personally, when I can afford it, I would fly Business or First - but I would have to be earning serious money or getting the company to pay (which is what a lot of people do).

However, I know of several very high net-worth individuals - we're talking millions plus - who refuse to fly anything but economy on their own money as they think anything else is a waste of money!!

Consider inter-European flights - would you honestly go into a shop and pay 400-500 pounds for a newspaper, or a glass of champagne, or a spoonful of caviar!!??

I think BA, BMI, UA and SAS have the economy plus to keep Frequent Flyers and high fare paying passengers on thier airline.

Perhaps more protective then a distintive new product. What do yo think of that strategy ?
