What's The Best Airport You've Been To?

Sun Jan 06, 2002 2:41 am

I'm just curious to see what everyone thinks. I haven't been to many aiports but I think my favourtie would have to be either Atlanta Hartsfield(ATL) or Chicago O'Hare International. I loved them both inside and I really love the airlines that are based there (AAL, UAL, DAL) I also liked Dallas. I live in MSP and I loved that airport too.

What do you think?

AMS and MUC....both are well laid out, and easy to navigate. They are well marked, modern, and (especially AMS) have a great selection of aircraft to watch!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Copenhagen Kastrup! This airport consistently wins "Best in the World" awards year after year. I can certainly see why. It makes other airports' management look like the Three Stooges.

For a passenger who must change the plane I would say ATL.

PHX did have really good spotting too. I'm thinking about getting a camera and sending in photos to airliners.net cause I have a really good spotting place at MSP that would make great photos.

"London" Stansted...I used London in quotes because Stansted is so far from London. However, it is closer to Ipswich, where i usually visit in the UK. Aside from location, it is ideal from a passenger's point of view. High ceiling with huge windows and lots of light make it feel very inviting and airy, and the shops and other facilities are well-placed. It is only a short walk to the train or bus terminals, and to get to the gate sattelites walking is further minimized by an automated transit service.

Other choices for good airports: Paris CDG T2 and Heathrow T4.

Worst would be Heathrow terminal 3 or Gatwick and Toronto Terminal 2.

T1 is ancient with few facilities, but at least the layout isn't that bad. You don't have to walk for 15 mins like at T2. But I can't wait for them to blow it up and make way for T-New  Smile

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)

By far, AMS has to be one of the best airports in the world. It certainly is the best I've ever been to.

What's amazing about AMS is how its been constantly expanded, yet it still extremely easy and convenient to get around, and not a "maze" like how some other airports have turned out.

They did one hell of a job designing this airport, it is certainly one of the most efficient in the world and yet its been added on to so many times. Its spacious, and very roomy, and you get GREAT views of planes from really anywhere in the airport.

And of course, its home to KLM.  Big grin

Denver Int'l (DEN) is also a very nice airport. Its the largest airport in North America, and the 2nd largest in the world. Its also currently the most advanced airport in the world (which led to some problems in its early days).

These pictures were taken before it opened.

Singapore Changi Airport! Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok and Seoul Incheon are great too but I didn't get to see too much of those two since my layover was short. In the US, Pittsburgh Intl Airport is my personal favorite.

Best airport I have flown into would probably be Orlando, the best for spotting would probably be Miami or Cincinatti. I like Miami for its variety and numerous spotting areas. Cincinatti has that awesome spotting area i discovered when i was heading down for Spring Break one year, its on the east side of the airport on a slight hill so you can actually overlook the airport. It had portapotties and broadcasted control tower.

The worst airport for both would probably be my hometown airport DTW.

For the passenger though DTW is majorly improving especially when the McNamara Terminal opens in Feb. DTW has the potential to be one of the best in the nation once all the bugs are worked out in the new building.

As for Spotting, things have been really going to sh** at DTW. At one time we had Check Point 6 to spot, it was a parking lot right on the approach to Runway 21R. The planes would fly 50-100 ft over your head, when a 747 would land it would stir up a huge dust storm. That parking lot closed about 6 years ago, if you park on the shoulder you can count on one of the Nazi cops there to be on a powertrip and threaten you with all kinds of threats from tickets to arrests. Another place you could once park was by the Mesaba hanger on the east side of the airport by runway 21L until one day a fat pig chased me out of there after a major argument from me to where I almost got arrested for telling him to find something better to do like go to a donut shop. I argued that I had every right to park there because there were no signs, sure enough the following week they put up the no parking/standing signs.

Wayne Road on the southwest side was good until it was closed for the building of 22R/4L

I personally love PHL. There is plenty of good restaurants, and a little mall between Concourses B and C. Not as big as the skymall in PIT, but still they have enough. (Bath and Body Works, the Gap, Godiva, etc. etc.) Its open, spacious, well lit, and I had alot of good sleep on the big couches in the crew room!  Big thumbs up Sitting 12 hours of ready reserve never bothered me when I was based in PHL.....then they "displaced" me to LGA aka. LaGarbage after 9-11..........  Sad

I must add that Prague Airport, for a small airport, is very nice. We have a completely new terminal, and they are extending pier B as well. Its east to get around in, the styling is very modern, and the terminal seating is good and in large enough supply. Too bad we don't have more flights coming in and out  Sad.

Why do you think Hartford has the worst airport? Did you see all the consturction going on? After the terminal expansion and existing terminal is remodeled, BDL will be one of the nicest airports in New England. Right now there isnt much in the form of shops or resteraunts, but that will soon change with the new expansion.

Spending five years growing up in Amsterdam has Schiphol (AMS) among my favorites, with ample room for spotting.

I still remember the *old* Zurich Kloten and the *old* Beirut International with their huge, spacious common (waiting) areas. That was back in the late 1960s. The Art Deco terminal at Long Beach still serves passengers, tastefully restored and updated, and is fully deserving of honorable mention here.

I admire the European terminals for their easy access to public transportation, something probably shared by several Asian airports (such as Haneda).

The worst airports I have ever been to include ATH and BRU, but both have been updated since I was there and are probably very nice. The old JFK International Terminal for departures was a real dog, too.

LHR, BKK, DXB, KUL, ORD, AMS, FRA, SIN

T3 at LHR is best for spotting different airlines' heavies though.

BKK has best atmosphere - bizarre colour scheme though!

MCO is my dearest! So far, it is one of the best attractions in Orlando!

But talking about efficency, I would say Changi is generations ahead all the other major aiports in the World. Helsinki has a well-operated terminal as well.

In the other hand, Latin-American airports are just a disgrace. MEX, GRU, SDU, CGH, EZE and even GIG stink all the way through. It is not even worth to mention other smaller ones.

Oohh... Can´t forget YVR! It looked so clever after the new terminal was finished.

Cheers!

Top 5 favourites

1 Leeds/Bradford International (LBA)
2 Manchester International (MAN)
3 Frankfurt (FRA)
4 Malta International (MLA)
5 Varadero International (VRA?)

I like LBA because it has very good facilities for such a compact airport, friendly staff and I have never had a delay from there; and I use the place very often!

Worst 5

1 Palma international (PMI)
2 Heraklion (HER)
3 Monastir International (MIR)
4 Liverpool John Lennon (LPL)
5 Agadir international (AGA)

I am half Spanish and my Mom still lives in Spain (I used to live there) - I visit Mallorca at least 3 to 4 times a year and I HATE Palma Airport.

It has to be the most badly designed airport monstrosity ever!! Concrete city and God help you if you are infirm, the distances to the gates would make Olympic athletes think twice before setting off!!

Heraklion is barely better, the last time I was there I checked-in outside on the grass with 225 Leeds Bradford bound pax and 3 Austrian flights! Hasten to say in the war zone that was check-in, stuff went wrong and we missed our slot..... 4 hours later and the thought of sitting like a sardine on the Britannia flight home was like heaven!! Just like the Pope I could have kissed the ground back home in Yorkshire when we landed!!

I would probably pick 3, narrowing it down to one is tough:
-KDEN Denver International-It was very new when I was there, and very easy, high-tech, and effecient. There's people movers everywhere, and you can get places very fast.
-KDCA Washington Reagan National-I love watching the final approaches to runway 19! That's about it for this airport, besides the terminals are very close to the runways and great for spotting.
-EGLL London Heathrow-I've never seen such a variety of airlines at one airport anywhere else, except maybe when I was at KJFK.

You guys don't get out of North America much, do you?

The best airport in the world is Changi Singapore, hands down. It has won award after award in every respectable magazine including Conde Nast Traveler.

What airport in the world offers free internet access if you have a computer (both line and lan), offers cheap internet access if you don't have a computer, offers a sit down call-and-be-served- area for checking-in transit passengers (and offers candies on the side too), have free entertainment (ie shows, dances, plays), free movies(blockbuster), free TV access on screens located throughout both terminals, FREE local tours if you have a 4 or more hour layover. There's a pool, tennis court, gym, dayrooms, spa, kiddies room..(for a small fee though). It's also a shopping mall galore, duty free prices which are amongst the lowest in the world. But most importantly, from aircraft to taxi stand in less than 30 minutes! Taxi queues are orderly too - in air conditioned covered comfort. Wait for the underground/subway/MRT line to the airport by this year!

Can't wait for Terminal 3 at end of 2004!

Skiathos (JSI) Greece.

It's a tiny building opposite two Tavernas. You sit in the Taverna gardens watching planes come in on base then final. When yours comes in , you wander over the road, check in, and wait about 20 minutes until you board.

Beats them crowded big city 'ports any day.

Best:

1. Changi
2. Narita (sentimental favorite!)
3. Hong Kong CLK
4. Dubai
5. Melbourne (Not convenient, but who could leave the Aussies out of this list!)

Worst:

1. LAX (Ever had to change airlines there?)
2. ORD (See LAX)
3. AMS (I think I walked a marathon to my flight once)
4. Shanghai (but this was the old airport)
5. Mumbai/Bombay (I will never forget my experiences there)
