Pilot Height

Mon Jan 07, 2002 1:13 pm

Hi
I am 6 foot 3 and I want to be an airline pilot. Will this restrict me in anyway. Could some tall pilots please tell me how tall they are and if this will be a problem for me. Can the pilots seats in most planes be put back? And do jets have the rudder pedals at there feet. I recently flew a bonanza and I were fine.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I am 6 foot 3 as well and projected to be 6 foot 5. I posted a topic on this earlier.

There seem to be no limits on tall people, only short people. I have sat in many commercial pilots' seats before flight and I have no problem with my head touching the top or anything.

I heard a student pilot at the airport saying yesterday that his father flies for Continental and is 6'5". I also met a commuter airline pilot not that long ago about the same height. I think you'll be fine.

I've never heard that there is a requirement not to be too short. I wonder if somebody could shed some light on this??? I have to sit on a pillow in a Cessna 152 but was told that in a lot of newer planes the seats are a lot more accomodating for shorter people. I am 5'1" (barely!)

I think the height restriction only concerns military pilots. They must "fit" so they don't rip off knees and stuff (ouch) if they have to eject.

LH has a restriction of either 6´4´´ or 6´6´´, I forgot which after I stopped growing at 6´3´´ (well before the "projected" 6´7´´  Wink/being sarcastic

Uh, I believe it was after this formula that you´ll reach twice the height that you have on your second birthday. And that was "confirmed" by some hand x-rays when I was about 10.

I'm 14 (Jan. 27, '87) and about 6ft 3 aswell. But as far as I know, there really is no restriction, you just have to fit in the plane. I too want to be a commercial pilot.

I'm 6'4" and have had no problems except when I wanted to fly fighters in the USAF. If I ejected my body would go with the seat but my knees to my feet would have went down with the aircraft. So my fighter career never got off the ground so to speak.  Smile
