Any 707s And/or DC-8s Still In Pax Service?

Tue Jan 08, 2002 10:08 pm

Unfortunately I´ve only experienced the DC-8-63 and B720 - both in my younger days. Anyway I´d like to know if any B707, B720 and/or DC-8s are still in revenue passenger service. I´ve seen a few examples in Africa but I don´t recall airline or registration. Any help would be appriciated.

There are no DC-8s left in pax service. The last airlines retired them in 1996. Some aircraft of ATI are combi's but only used by subcontractors (military, UN etc). A few others are VIP aircraft.
A few 707s are in pax service; Saha Air is reported to fly 4 on some domestic flights in Iran (local sale only). Inter-Air of South Africa also has reported two 707s for flights to Mauritius amonst others, but there are sightings they were parked in 2001. Jordan Aviation flies one on charters to Baghdad, amongst others. Bin Mahfooz Aviation and Air Gulf Falcon (both based or seen often at Dubai and Sharjah) have two each, mostly used for hadj charters, same with the two of Omega Air.
Romavia and JARO of Romania each have one. They use it for charters (maybe IT to Canaries, Tunisia etc for Romanians), but I couldn't succeed in getting a ride on them.
Hope you might succeed in flying one ever.

nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

A friend of mine flew the Luxor Air 707 on an Egyptian domestic flight in 2000 or 2001; this was a normal package tour booked with a major German tour operator. However, I understand that particular plane has since been written off, and I doubt LXO has another one (I don´t even know whether they still exist).

Consider yourself lucky, you´ve had DC8 and 707 flights at least - I gues I´ll never get one, unless I become president of Argentina (which seems to be quite easy nowadays...  Wink/being sarcastic)

LADE of Argentina still uses 707s for charters. You might find some info at www.lade.com.ar

Hi Daniel,

I guess you´re right - if you´re going to become a president Argentina is your next destination. You should be able to make it down there when the next head of state is to be appointed  Wink/being sarcastic

Anyway - yes I am pleased that I had some trips on both B720s and DC-8s. The B720 flights were from Billund (BLL) to Palma De Mallorca and Rhodos with Maersk Air and Conair respectively while the DC-8 flight was with Sterling Airways to Tenerife (as far as I recall).

However I am not looking for another opportunity to fly these lovely birds and my question regarding revenue operators was just curiosity!

I too am glad that I got the chance to ride on both the 707 and DC8 in my youth (and even a Convair 880 in 1974 which I dont remember). A TWA 707 from Chicago to LHR and a few other TWA routes from Denver. I rode DC-8s on many occassions, mostly on UA out of Denver. The last UA DC8 flight I recall was in 1986 from DEN-IAD and return. The last DC-8 flight I was on was on Delta from Orlando to DFW in.....damn, 1990 I believe. I think Delta took the last of their DC-8s out of service in 1991.

We can be thankful that most DC-8s still in operation are US registered so we will be seeing them for some time to come whereas 707s are almost all registered in Africa, the Middle East or S. America. They are fading fast.

It appears there are a few DC-8s out there that are either convertible frieghters or exec. aircraft, but as far as getting to ride on a pax version, I would say that those days have passed. The two Armie De L'Air (France) DC-8 72CFs are two lovely aircraft that still operate VIP and troop transport missions all over the world. Also, I remember that there was a DC-8 that belonged to the Gabon Goven't that was a CF that was recently refurbished in Long Beach, who knows where that one is now????

Brisair appears to have a non- freighter DC-8-62 on the books but again, who knows what the condition of that particular aircraft is. The only other one I could find was a DC-8 72 belonging to Jet Aviation, reg. HB-IGH that is not listed as a freighter.

That Gabonese DC-8 was at San Antonio, Texas in mid-September undergoing servicing at Dee Howard.

Hello Woodsboy,

I believe UA retired it's DC-8s until 1991. Here's a photo from the database dated 1991:

I was lucky to have been able to fly on both the 707 and DC-8. I flew from LAX to SLC on a 707-300B of SkyWorld in 1987. Great flight, fastest trip i ever made to SLC. I then flew to San Fran on United's DC-8-71. This was in 91, the year the last of UAs DC-8s were retired. It's unfortunate they don't fly anymore for passenger service. Both were great rides. No offense to anyone, but you must admit, aircraft nowadays are getting a bit too "cookie cutter" Gotta love the narrow body 4 engine monsters.

I am too young to have had a chance to get on to 707/ 720 / DC-8.

But I still enjoy seeing DC-8s in the sky when they regularly come to the nearby airport as freighters.

Does anybody know when actor John Travolta still has 707 ?
