CX-330-300 Gear Drops During Flight. Normal?

Wed Jan 09, 2002 8:12 pm

On CX709 last night, (HKG-BKK on a A330-300), soon after the wheels came up they went down again at around 3000 ft. After about 60 seconds of the plane shuttering, the gear went up again. It was a bit shocking to all the passengers. The Captain made an announcement that there was a "small matter that had been corrected and that the aircraft was servicible to continue to BKK". This has never happened to me before and I was just wondering if it is somewhat normal or did the crew just make a mistake by lowering the gear inflight ( especially after that CX flight a couple of years ago that completed the whole flight with the gear down after someone forgot to remove a locking pin).

Actually one of my colleagues told me the same story a couple of weeks ago. He was on a CX A330 and they had gear problems as well. As I understood it the gear wouldn't retract after take-off from HKG and the crew tried a couple of times until it worked. The flight then continued as scheduled.

That is not a normal action, but a corrective action.
I guess they had an indication that the gear was not properly uplocked after take off, so they just recycled it, which is the what the checklist asks for in the 330.
