SQ New J Class - Implementation & Website?

Thu Jan 10, 2002 4:14 pm

Some questions regarding Singapore Airlines' new Raffles (Business) Class featuring the 'SpaceBed'. How far through the installation programme are SQ, and at what rate are they doing the installations? What aircraft have them so far - and will 9V-SMC/D/E/F (and whatever others have the older First class still) be getting them at all? Also, is there anywhere out there, including the SQ website, that has more details on the new product than just the press release? I have looked around SQ's site, and I can't find anything about it at all.

Thanks for any help

To my knowledge no SQ aircraft have the new seats. The interior upgrade has been put on hold until later this year due to the generel economic slowdown and airline crisis following September 11. So only BA, CX, SA and VS offer full flat (or almost full flat) seats in regular business class on selected routes.

SQ's new Business Class product has been delayed for some time now but I have heard that 2 aircrafts are servicing SIN-LHR routes. The new product will not feature the Tenzing email and intranet service.

There have been rumours in the industry that SQ delayed the installation to match CX's J class offerings. If you noticed, hen SQ announced its product one day after CX's announcement, the position of PTV's on SQ were on the armrest but if you examine CX's product, the PTV is in front of the cocoon.

In comparison, CX's new business class was given a 5 star rating in a recent Business Traveller (Asia Pacific edition) trip check. The seats are very comfortable with the product featuring Audio-Video-On-Demand (AVOD), Live BBC Radio, 22 Audio Channels , Tenzing email and intranet, power outlets and finally the 5 star service delivery. On the Airbus A340 and Boeing 747-400 aircrafts, other features include changing room/bar as well as six-way colour lighting system which changes according to the time zone you travel on.

For more details on Cathay Pacific's new Business Class, please click on the following link:

I am sure the SQ SpaceBeds will be terrific and I look forward to utilising the service soon. More details and reports soon.

A changing room? How intriguing. Is there one on the A330?

No Internet Surfing In The Air!

Thu Jan 10, 2002 5:58 pm

I don't think you can do that on tenzing. As far as I know, there is currently a test going on for real internet usage on board, and that is a B744 of LH, which is currently being fitted with the necessary technology!
To all LH-Bashers: Please note, this info came from Boeing, not LH, though in the meantime I read it on the LH Air magazine, too!

I think all the fuzz about surfing the internet in the sky I heard for the last few years is wishfull thinking.

Satelites offering the bandwidth required above the oceans is not there. And no one wants to pay billions to get them there. Back to reality ...

...about availability for pax, but nevertheless, there is one LH 744 being refitted with the necessary equipment by Boeing, that confirmed, they tested it on a 737 for several months/years, and it is safe to use now. Obviously there is bandwidth available.

Bandwidth for a test on a single aircraft on one route perhaps. Offering hundreds of people the service around the world at low cost is a different story.
Technical feasebility is only a first step.

SQ, AA, DL, SAS, UA recently pulled out.

Coming back to the sleeper subject, was the SQ sleeper perhaps too heavy and/or less reliable (lots of italian machinery/electronics inside the seat) ?

Will the seats after the delay be exactly the same as the one promoted a few months ago ?

As they didn't change their sales promotion, it'll probably be the same seat as planned. As for your implications concerning the reliability of Italian machinery, well.....I won't comment on that, though I'm not Italian.

I dislike the way Singapore_Air bashes its competitors (in this case CX) with negative comments. This does not show any professionalism and respect from other users if he continues the way he is going about it.

It is time for him to act in a civilised and professional manner. I hope he can do us a favour for 2002.

Etravelconsult:

Why do you keep saying Singapore_Air is childish and umprofessional when you also usually bash your competitors (SQ) with negative comments???

Sob sob. I only asked a question. Obviously that's too much!

Anyway, there is no such website for the SIA SpaceBed at present.

Unfortunately, it must be said that the Singapore Airlines Group management in it's wisdom, has decided to postpone the SpaceBed to as yet an unspecified date (though some people actually do know the date of launch).

However, I think everyone is forgetting that there is an airline which has the biggest business class bed which exceeds the size of many airlines mentioned on this thread.

Singapore_air I think you have forgotten the fact that SQ does not have those Space beds yet. So SQ does not have the 'longest and widest bed in business class' until the real thing come into service. It is just that SQ started Advertising itself too early. CX has just started advertising its new business class, and that's a few months after the real thing came into service.

Anyway, here's the largest and widest bed in the sky:

thats not a bed. Its a seat. A bed goes fully flat. Well an airline one... like British Airways' FULLY flat bed.
Unless that South African one isn't properly reclined.

Ok sorry Singapore air I know what you mean now. You caught me.

By the way what is the seat pitch and size of the SAA one? I looked through the website and it says only "increased seat pitch from 48" to 55" ' and that doesn't seem to be describing a seat THAT big as seen in the picture. it looks like at least 70" in the picture.
CX has 60" pitch.

Oops I must have missed the part about the new seat the last time I surfed the SAA page. Now I found it and it says 78" pitch. Wow that's a lot! Even greater than SQ's First class !

Actually SIA's First Class is 6ft 6". Most First Classses are like that anyway.

It looks nice though. It's a shame SAA's PTV is "small" though.
