SN Pilot And His Dog!

Thu Jan 10, 2002 6:48 pm

There is/was a captain on a RJ100 that flew for SN. He always had his dog with him in the kockpit. The pilot is close to retirement.

I think he was some kind of chiefpilot or something, so that's why he was allowed to have his dog with him.
Always when you saw that he was the pilot, we walked up to the kockpit to say hello...to the dog!  Smile
Anyone knows who I'm talking about, and what the pilots name is?

He said his dog has almost as much as flighthours as he have on RJ100. Big grin

Regards.

When I was flying out of Ostend in the 80s, I used to bring my dog with me on our cargo flights. She'd stay on board and act as a guard - especially useful in Africa!

I have never heard of anything like this?! So where would it actually be? Did the flight attendents have to feed it Pal during the flight? Laugh out loud What breed of dog was it?

The dog was lying on the floor in the kockpit during T/O and landing. And inflight he was sitting with the pilot.
I think it was a cockerspaniel.

"She'd stay on board and act as a guard - especially useful in Africa!"

I've never heard pilots who had to keep a dog in the
cockpit to guard the aircraft, where did you fly ? My
uncle used to fly for Air Zaire (DC-10 Cpt. and now retired from Skyjet), SOTEXKI (DC-3 cargo captain
flying to numerous remote and small grass fields...),
an other Uncle still fly freighters in Uganda and I've never heard such stories...Don't you exagerate again
your African stories ? I don't pretend to know everything
in this huge continent, still it looks more like an essay
for Westerners!!! (NIGERIA=/=the rest of Africa...)!!!  Insane

The pilots name is Freddy Deneffe and the dog's name 'Captian Mac'.

Freddy has about 32700 flighthours, the dog 3000.
Freddy flew on DC-3, Viscount, Fokkers (different types - he used to be plot with Fokker), 727 and BAe RJ.
Tomoorow is his last day with a return flight to Stockholm.

Tca256 - it's clear from your posts that you've never been to Africa in your life.

We operated mainly to Nigeria; but on an adhoc basis to many other points in Africa.

Considering that my partner in the CL44 tells me that one of the propellors was stolen last year; along with ladders, tools, clothing, thousands of litres of fuel - and all within what is supposedly a secure area at N'Djili Airport (ie the cargo ramp) I can see that things have not improved in Africa over the last ten years or so.

And yes, we did carry firearms on board the aircraft - in common with most other freight operators.

When did your uncle fly for Air Zaire? If he knows Lubumbashi he probably knows my partner, who used to fly the Carvair from there.

MD-11er.....

Thanks. I do remember now that the pilot also told us that Mac had trained for all safety courses to be able to fly.
Well, it's a fun thing, and I have never seen/heard of it either before or after Mac.

Have a nice day!

I find this quite hard to beleive. If it is true it is very strange. SUDDEN have you actually seen this pilot and his dog? Has anybody else? Are there any pics on A.net or anywhere else? What a strange co-incidence for this pilot - and his dog - to retire when this thread was started.

This is very true indeed!!!!
I started the topic because I wanted to know if he was still flying or been retired.
I will not sit here and try to make you believe it. That's your choice.
Why not call BRU and ask them.
And yes, I have talked to both the pilot and the dog, when they came for turnarounds.

I do confirm.

I have seen this guy and his dog a few month ago (already ...!) at the Sabena crew tax free shop. That's not a joke.

Anyway good luck and happy retirment for both of them. We will miss this very special and joyfull "crew" .

The only reason you know about this, is cause you found it out yourself, or heard if from your collegues.
And you also live in Malta, so I don't find it strange that you didn't know it.

Lots of pictures this week in Belgian Newspapers and on the TV : no doubt someone with a scanner will post them soon.End of an era, really, and farewell to two great aviation characters.

The pilot you talk about is flying for the last time today:
He will make his last landing at 16.35 LT from Stockholm Arlanda. His name is Freddy De Neef.
He is captain on RJ85/RJ100 and BAe 146 for DAT. His dog is a black and white cocker he bought in Arizona a few years ago ; He is called Captain Mac. I've flown with him (I meant both of them) for a couple of times and I can tell you this guy was really smart and lovely with everyone !!!

We will miss Freddy & Captain Mac and I wish him the very best for the future but I'm sure he will be very sad to stop flying...

Hi Sudden,

I was handling SN at STR a few month ago ! Cpt. Name must be Deneffe or something else ! He is one of the coolest Cpts. on DAT RJ100 ! It was always funny and
interresting to work with him ! He knows a lot of stories
from the time he´s flying !
So good bless him and his dog if he really get retired !

Ok, can you pass on a farewell to both of them from a loadmaster that really had a good time when they were the crew.
I did not work at AMS at those times.
Also tell him that he has a thread on the no.1 site.
Would you do that for me?

Ok. Then unless this is the biggest scam in history, I am starting to beleive you guys.
And you also live in Malta, so I don't find it strange that you didn't know it.
SUDDEN are you implying something with this statement? FYI I am FA and fly to all major European cities. That is where I usually get my aviation info - and from this forum. I am surprised that I never heard of this Captain before. Especially since in BRU we get a despatcher who is very well versed in the aviation field and we talk a lot. Funnily enough there has never been any mention of Capt Fred and Capt Mac.
Perhaps you can pay me a visit on one of my flights and have a coffee together (sorry the bars will be sealed - LOL). It will be my pleasure.

Freya thank you. Would you please send the pics as an attachment? It can be ages before I go to BRU. And I can't wait to see them. Even print them and hang them in the briefing room. Sorry I doubted you all. But this is the strangest and most interesting aviation related post I have seen so far. I am sure Capt Freddie had special priviledges to carry his dog on his flights. One question though: What did he do with the dog in layovers?

LMML14/32 : the dog always stayed with him - exception being the UK because of the quarantine laws. The dog accompanied Freddy everywhere altho once or twice airport security got a bit long faced about it. Why I don't know. There are many stories but the one I actually got first hand was when a lady journalist passenger was not allowed to take her dog into the cabin. She was rather irritated to see Freddy's dog looking at her from the flight deck floor as she boarded the aircraft and filed a story on it.Result was that Freddy was hauled in and told that he wasn't allowed to take the dog anymore because it was against regulations. Freddy pointed out that the operations manual did not have anything to say on the subject and he wasnt therefore doing anything wrong. The Ops Manual was therefore amended to say ' it is not permitted for crew members to take their dog on scheduled flights'. problem solved..Next charter flight the dog was there ..another interview ..another consultation of the Ops Manual.. no mention of charter flights. Another operations manual amendment.. in fact this story goes on and on but ultimately ends with Freddie agreeing to keep the flight deck door closed when the dog was with him ( all this was, of course, long before 11 September). Finally there was the time that Customs brought a sniffer dog for a routine check of the cabin ater the pax had left.. Freddie's dog simply lay there with a superior expression watching the sniffer dog with a ' and what the hell do you think YOU are doing' look about him. Tanks and lawns come to mind.

It wasn't stop after 11th sept !!!!
I saw him recently with his dog on flight to MAN !!! It wasn't a night stop flight, just up and down rotation so the the British couldn't forbid him doing that as the aircraft remains a Belgian territory !! Anyway the guy's character was excellent !!! He bluffed everyone with Cpt Mac... I love that smart spirit !
It was so funny to see him flying with the dog lying on the jumpseat  Big grin

Yes I 've heard this dog in the cockpit thing but I was not expecting it for at least 20 more years. As all you know about the future airliners there will be a pilot and a dog as flight crew. The dogs duty is to bite the pilot when ever he touches the controls and the pilots duty is to feed the dog Smile Smile Or maybe it may be the seeing eye dog for one of the pilots but can not be sure about that until I can see the uniforms of the crew, which one of them wears the three point arm band SmileIt sure is a very funny thing to have a dog in the cockpit especially if it starts peeing on the centerconsole or it suddenly decides jump onto his beloved owner during takeoff roll or final approach. Cheers to everybody.
