Port Columbus

Fri Aug 06, 1999 2:14 am

FlyCMH,

Saw your post, hell I’m glad to know there’s someone from Columbus who enjoys following aircraft and airline developments.

Now for the reason of this post. You mentioned the plans that the Columbus Airport Authority had. Well, I visited Port Columbus’s web site and saw the paragraph about the “Vision For The 21st Century”, but there was no reference to any specifics. Could you point me in the right direction or fill me in yourself? I know there is construction going on now, but it looked to be parking expansion.

By the way, did you see the three new photos of the AWA B757-2x Ohio c/s that were posted yesterday? I think they were taken in Boston, they were very crisp and sharp. They provided details I hadn’t noticed before.

If you wish you can e-mail me at bpwired@earthlink.net.

Thanks,

Bob

Hey, what's up? I should have told you, the Official Port Columbus website hasn't been updated for about 3 1/2 years. There is a new "unofficial" airport website at:

www.iwaynet.net/~maglick/portcolumbus/frame/index.html

This is a very good site, it is always updated. Look under the "airport construction" part. You'll see the new plans there. Also, yes, I have seen those new pictures of the Ohio plane from Boston. Those pictures are very, very good.

WOW!! Now that’s a great site. I’ll drop the creator a note this weekend. The future plans for the airport are beyond my anything I could have imagined, I had no idea. My folks never told me the plans were this massive.

I don’t want to speak ill of the official web page, but, shame, shame, shame! This is one of the best Airport web sites I’ve ever seen. Well thought out and executed. If visitors to Columbus saw and used this site, they’d know that Columbus is a wonderful city with an eye on the future. I’ll get off my soap box now, it’s just that I love Columbus, and I always enjoy coming home.

Thank you very, very much!

What About Rickenbacker

Fri Aug 06, 1999 10:47 pm

Rickenbacker has made tremendous strides don't forget. Thr former Airforce base is really shaping up into a Cargo and Logistcal dream. UPS, Fed EX, Polar Air Cargo, and others are daily sites there.
Around the former base too is alot of major warehouses that are home to numerous distributors. Really looks like Columbus is trying to gear up for the future in air freight. Good Job Rickenbacker!

You're absolutely right. Rickenbacker has made many strides in the past years and has established itself as a world cargo inland port. Yet, there have been some down turns in the past year or two. Southern Air Cargo, which had a hub in Rickenbacker, recently stopped service and their hub at LCK was depleated. There were some major plans for a large new cargo terminal too, but I believe those were later scrapped. Yet, I am to believe that there is still one large plan still on the table. This plan I think would triple the size of the current airport, add 2-4 more runways, and add more cargo terminals and industrial parks. There was a large article in the Columbus Dispatch about the expansion. But still, I hope that CMH goes with their new expansion plans soon.

I gotta be honest with ya people, I had completely forgotten about Rickenbacker. Too many years away and things begin to fade. I can remember when the base closed and hearing about the plans of making it into a cargo center. That’s a heck of an idea to enlarge it and combine it with an industrial park. Hope the powers that be can make it happen!

It would be quite a accomplishment if Columbus could pull off having two major aviation centers.
