Future Prospects For IAH

What do you guys see in the future of IAH? What new routes by Continental? Any new airlines? I'd like to see a few more international carriers. Do you guys think that the opening of Terminal E will have a big impact?

I thought CO was going to open IAH-AMS-IAH in March, but I guess that will be cancelled.

From what I know, it will still happen. Just a 762 instead of 764. Maybe someone with more information can help out.

AMS-DTW also started as a limited KL/NWA code-share 10 years ago.

Now it´s 5 (?) times a day with a widebody ?

Would be nice to see IAH develop into such a steaming HUB for the Carabian/ South America for NWA/KLM/CAl ...

You are right, AMS is still on. I believe it will be upgraded to a -400 for the summer but don't quote me. IAH has a lot of growth potential. Unlike CAL's other hubs, growth and traffic increases are not the limiting factor. IAH will be the new gateway to south America. Mexico, Central America, and longer hauls to South America will fill up that new terminal in the next few years. The instability in South America in recent months will resolve itself. We have a White House that is going to give the needed attention on this region of the world and foster better trade relations with the countries in the region. IAH will be impacted by this final step to really bring about a fair trading agreement with South America.
IAH is just starting to experience some new construction projects that will last until next Christmas. These include the terminal, new parking and rental car lots and a new taxiway with a bridge going over JFK BLVD. Continental's 10 year growth will occur out of IAH as EWR's trans-atlantic growth can not get much stronger than the pre 9/11 numbers.

Just one opinion. Anyone else?

It is going to be a pain entering the airport from the South main enterance until October at the earliest. We have been told by the company to plan alternate entry points to get to the employee lots etc. I mostly commute by air into work but when I do drive I enter from the East enterance from HWY 59 on Will Clayton PKWY.

I would not be surprised to see ATA adding service to IAH from Midway in the not to distant future.
Living in LA, ORD/MDW will always be home!

Well, as for Latin carriers opening up flights to IAH, I can't say for certain. LA Cargo has a weekly 767-300F flight into IAH and their pax operations like most other major Latin carriers have landing rights here. I would hope that some would begin flights but we are not exactly batting a 1000. Viasa was the last S.American carrier flying into IAH before their demise. Varig in the late 80s stated that a GIG/IAH was in the planning stage, but it never materlized, Ecuadtoriana also planned a Quito/IAH flights in the early 90s, soon after CO caught wiff and began their own IAH/GUY and UIO flights......suffice it to say Ecuadtoriana's colurful birds never graced our airport.

Rumours from several reliable sources have Emirates (EK) starting an IAH service in 2003/4. But I remain a bit skepitical until I see an official press release, even then I won't be 100% convinced until I see one of their planes parked @ D. BWIA is still slated for an IAH service, the $64 is...when?! Air India has been talking of an IAH service since the mid 80s..so far nothing, the big sticking points here are AI 's current finincial status, lack of aircraft and the always annoying Bermuda 2.

I believe that IAH's prospects are very bright indeed. However a lot is going to rely on HAS's ability to sell IAH and Houston, so far they do not appear to be doing too much.

Being a mid-sized int'l market, we have a lot of competition that is also hungry for business. In particular our arch nemsis DFW as well as ATL, MCO, MSP, PHX, SAN, ect.... So only time will tell, if we are able to pull into the lead or get left in the dust!

As for the opening of 'E' and leaving more gate space for int'l carriers. Well, I am reminded of all of the hype when D (IAB back then) opened an all the talk of carriers from all over the globe just aching to get into Houston.....so much for the hype! I also remember reading in the Chronicle (or perhaps it was the Post) that IAB was to have those 'Air Lounges' that you may have seen at JFK or IAD, well this was just another con put out by the marketing team......I do not thimk that 'E' will have a major impact on attracting new int'l service.

I am excited about the huge new cargo complex that is now under construction off Lee Rd. When completed it is suppose to be one of the largest air cargo facilities in the world, capable of handeling 20 747s simultaneously. If ture this would be impressive. I can definetly see an increase in both domestic and foreign cargo birds out of IAH

Great points, Thomas.
I agree fully that if IAH is to prosper as an Int'l gateway, HAS has to get it's butt into gear and actually market the airport and make it attractive to foreign carriers. Because, up until now, not much has happened and we have watched our neighbors to the north at DFW launch foreign carriers from around the globe.

I have heard that Air India has the rights to fly to IAH, but it's Bermuda 2 that's holding the whole thing up. Emirates plans to start IAH service (along with JFK, LAX, and ORD) when they take delivery of their A345's.

Right away, I don't think LAN Chile will go to IAH. They have Oneworld partner, American, at DFW about 250 miles north on US-90(highway).

I can't speak for any other airlines. Let's be honest though, while IAH hasn't really grown for overseas carriers, they haven't really lost any. KLM,BA,AF, and LH have been there for a long time. DFW has BA,LH, and AF, but AF will stop DFW service this month. We have gotten SN, but they went out of business, and luftansa decreased frequency, so it is probably about equal.
DFW has done better in the Asian market though. KAL seems pretty comitted to DFW as they use it as a stopping point for an ATL flight, and instead of going through LAX, it now goes non-stop.

Anyway, I thought KAL and Alitalia were going to start IAH service, but i guess it never happened.

Well, the airlines I would like to see the most at IAH are:

Domestic: Alaska, Hawaiian, National, more domestic widebodies!

South American: Avianca 767's, Aerolineas Argentinas, Varig, Lan Chile.

European: Iberia, SAS, Alitalia

Africa: South African, Egypt Air

Middle East: the return of Gulf Air or Emirates to start service.

Asia: Absolutely Anything!

I doubt IAH will ever see service from Quantas or Air New Zealand

Anyway, spotting here at LAX is a welcome relief from the good old days at IAH. Although, I don't have pride for the place like I do IAH.

I too doubt that a South Pacific service is in the offing....but you never can tell.

SAA use to have 3 weekly flights into IAH utilizing a 747SP but those flights were cancelled due to the city of Houston (as most US cities did at the time) breaking all business links with South Africa in 1985/6. Regardless of the vastly diffrent political scene in South Africa as well as Mayor Brown's recent trip to S.Africa to drum up business links including a re-introduction of SAA service to IAH, they have shown no interest in returning Houston.

Egyptair has shown some interest in IAH as well....but then again so have so many other carriers!

Alitalia....see Egyptair!

Gulf Air, well they lasted less than a year here, and considering their current financial state it is highly unlikely that they will return to the US anytime soon.

SAS, actually they were prepared to start an IAH/CPH flight from what I understand but it was called off when their relationship with CO broke up.

Iberia. Interesting story on this. In the late 80s, IB had planned to start a MAD/IAH/MEX service. This was a result of a bilateral agreement between the US and Spain after AA started a DFW/MAD run (is this still in operation ?). Sadly, however our hometown airline....you know who..compalined to the DOT that the proposed IB service was unfair, so forth and so on. Long story short, IB never starts it's Houston/Mx service, CO gets a n/s from EWR to MAD and Houston gets screwed out of another European destination!

Avianca.....don't hold your breath. If we were to see a Colombian carrier it more than likely would be ACES and their A320s.

Aerolineas Argentinas, sadly like much of the Argentine economy, it is on life support. Lets hope that things get better for all concerned in Argentina.

Asian carriers. Why we have no service to Asia via an Asian carrier is still a mystery to me. The business and O/D is certainly here. I suppose that many of these companies assume that only one Texas city can support their services and to add IAH would really be streatching it. In part I blame those damned alliances, Oneworld, Skyteam, Star, ect...are sucking many Asian carriers into their respective alliances at a fantastic rate and due to the fact that CO is still not sold on 'Wings' (or whats left of it), IAH may loose out altogether in getting an Asian. I have heard rumours that HAS is in talks with China Southern, again those are rumours with no real proof that they are true.

Still, 'Let's keep hope alive'!
