AA Might Have Big Plans For MSP

Fri Jan 11, 2002 8:42 am

I have a good friend who works for AA in MSP. He just told me some interesting speculation among AA employees at MSP.

- MSP is getting ready to open 20 new ticket counter positions in the main terminal as part of the massive renovation it's undergoing. AA wants all of them. Now I understood him to mean that wouldn't be an additional 20 for AA, but rather an additional 14 or so because I think they currently have 6 or so.

- AA wants to take over the D concourse. This "concourse" is actually a little circle of gates between the C and E concourses (it used to be considered part of the C concourse when the C concourse was known as the Green concourse). There are 6 gates in the D concourse, so that would be 2 more than they have now, assuming they move their current operations to D. However...

- The D concourse gates can't handle widebodies and AA wants a widebody gate. Hmmmm..... very interesting.

- Speculation is that AA might start flights to MIA from MSP and perhaps a couple more places... LAX? JFK? SJU?

That sounds kind of pointless... ORD is just a stone's throw away... they could beef up capacity there.

Actually, NWA has a monopoly on flights to MIA, LAX and JFK from MSP, so I don't think it's pointless. Especially MIA and LAX.

It looks like AA wants to turn MSP into a transfer point. Smart move if you ask me.

Many airlines are doing that now. Beefing up certain destinations, and using them as transfer points for there passengers.

Like DL's operation in Denver. They lease 5 gates here, and is a big transfer point for CVG-SLC passengers. They make a stop in DEN and change.

Regards.

I REALLY WANT THIS TO HAPPEN! I'm tired of NWA. I want AA here, I wish to see service to JFK, or overseas! I sure hope this happens! MSP is a large airport that can handle much more airlines!

I do like NW, but would like to see AA here. Diversity is always nice. BA and LH have tried to get in a few years ago, but Minneapolis Airport Comission wouldn't let them.
I here BMI is trying to get in to and Midwest express. Maybe AA will get a gate on concourse G which can handle anyize plane on gates 1-10. Iceland air has a gate there.

If any international long haul happens, I would say SJU. As previously stated, ORD is just a stone's throw away.

This does sound interesting though, I would like to hear what follows.

According to my timetable collection, AA actually flew MSP-LAX for a while. Anyone remember this?

I'm always for some new diversity at MSP.

Is it me, or do I see a lot of posts on A.net about MSP and it's lack of choices? That seems kind of bad, considering that Minneapolis is just a medium-sized city in the American Midwest. We're not talking New York, Paris, London, Tokyo here...

MSP AA expansion?!? Not going to happen.
As correctly stated, ORD is too close to MSP. In addition, AA inherited TWA's STL hub which is also too close to ORD.

I don't see AA doing too much at MSP outside of maybe adding a couple of flight to their hubs in MIA and SJC. Like several others have said MSP is too close to ORD. Lets not forget ORD will be going through a 6.6 billion dollar expansion that will double traffic over the next 10-20 years and AA will be playing a major role in that along with UA.
Living in LA, ORD/MDW will always be home!

MIA-MSP would be great and a possiblity. NW has a monopoly on the Miami-Minneapolis market. I think it is 5/6 dailies from MIA and FLL. There was Sun Country on MIA-MSP, seasonally, but they are gone. I could see some expansion, but nothing big.

Blink182, SJU is domestic.

Sounds good, glad they are expanding. You know they got a lot more planes to manage now, since the merge. I wonder if they are going to compete with NWA coming up to ANC? No AA in ANC yet.

MSP = almost 3 million people, that is not a "medium sized midwest city"... A medium sized midwest city would be Indianapolis or Omaha.

People, keep in mind it doesn't matter about how big the city is, it's the airport's airlines that matter! MSP has a hub for NWA, and gets tons of travellers a year! What was MSP rated for business? Anybody know, that'd be helpful!

AA doesn't care of ORD is a stones throw away. That has nothing to do with it. DFW isn't that far from ORD.
ANd to those who say MSP is just a medium sized mid-west city...in has 3 million and proably a lot bigger companies than you have in your city consider its got one of the largest concentrations of Fortune 500 companies (not the largest for those who would like to ssay I siad that.). Minnesota is one of the hightest ranked states to live in and havea business in also. MSP is a NW hub and gets the 7th highest amount of travelers each year out of any north american airport, beating out all other midwest cities besides ORD. Are all these people from MSP? No way. But they are connecting here. ANd MSP owns a huge monopoly on flights out of here, so it would make sense. ANd ORD isn't that close. YOu can't just drive there in 2 hours, try 7 or 9.
Diversity will come eventually. But NW (as much as I love it) has to shove over a little.

Just a silly rumor which has not a single ounce of validity. I'm sure Lee, AA's GM, would love to hear that one!

Let The Games Begin

Sun Jan 13, 2002 2:18 pm

Well...I hope AA makes up their mind soon so they can get a good Minnesota sized whooping from Big Red.

Personally I think the expansion wil come more in the form of Regional jets operated by Eagle and destinations like Duluth, Sioux Falls, Fargo, will be the first.

let the games begin
