Vietnam Airlines to Buy Five Airbus From Europe for US$753 MLN

HANOI, Jan 10 Asia Pulse - Vietnam Airlines is preparing to sign a contract to buy five Airbus A321 medium-haul aeroplanes from Europe as part of a VND11,300 billion (US$753 million) 10-year fleet expansion plan, said the company's general director, Nguyen Xuan Hien.
The national carrier is discussing technical details and prices with Airbus suppliers, according to Vietnam Airlines official, Nguyen Chan.

The aircraft would be used for regional and short-haul flights and would be delivered over 18 months.

Additionally, Vietnam Airlines has signed a contract to buy three short-haul ATR72 aeroplanes.

The carrier received one of them last September and the others are to be delivered in February and June, said Hien.

Last December, the airline agreed to buy four Boeing 777-200ER aeroplanes for long-distance flights. The purchase was the first major business transaction between Vietnam and the United States after ratification of the bilateral trade agreement.

Vietnam Airlines expects delivery of two of the Boeings in 2003, one in 2004, and one in 2005.

It currently operates 26 aircraft, of which it owns seven (five ATR72s and two Fokker70s) and rents the remainder.

The airline plans to expand its fleet to about 40 aircraft by 2010, comprising nine ATR72s (owning six and renting three), 18 A320-A321s (owning five, renting 13), five Boeing 777-200ERs (owning four, renting one), as well as others, said Dinh Xuan Huong, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam
