How To Get An Upgrade?

Fri Jan 11, 2002 3:48 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know whether it is possible to get an upgrade from Economy Class to First/Raffles Class on Singapore Airlines(SQ).

Thanks in advance....

Sure, no problem! Just hand them your credit card and they will gladly give you a J class ticket!  Big grin  Big thumbs up

Yet another 'How do I get an upgrade without paying for it' question.

If you go to an electrical store do you expect to be given a Pentium 4 PC when you only pay for a Game Boy?

Same thing (or similar  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)...

If economy is overbooked or if there are many free seats in business, they will upgrade a few, but they upgrade the ones they want and not the ones who hang around begging for it at check-in.

Herman if you want a free (well almost free upgrade) i strongly suggest you dont pay the lowest possibe tourist class fare they always go for the full fare or higher fare y class passengers for upagrades, but before paying a higher fare check the load on the flight. Then again why go by SIA? Book a World traveller plus seat at BA and then see if you can get an upgrade with them, an even bigger chance with BA!!!!

Ryanb741, Staffan & Braniff Place, THANK YOU

It sure shows your level of maturity compared to the posting by VH-EBV. The ticket is indeed Y Class. It has already been purchased, though.

Nevertheless, Good Day/Year to All. My questions are answered. I suggest the topic to be closed, hee  Wink/being sarcastic

Herman,

I would highly suggest that you enroll in KrisFlyer. 'Free' upgrades tend to go to those people enrolled in the respective airline's frequent flier program.

After enrolling make sure your FF# is on your reservation!

SIA and MAS don't give even to their own staff ID90 (ie SR staff get 90 on MAS/SIA but their own staff get only 75!)
Also the Upgrade policy of MAS (and I assume also SIA) is very strange. With MAS I know that staff are not allowed to make upgrades even for staff who what ever (in some cases they will do, ie family member etc). So if the flight is not full forget about an upgrade on SIA.

Just walk in as one of the last passengers and go straight to the Business Class. Sit on a vacant spot and wait.

I did it like that and they found out pretty fast.
The airplane was rolling already and the purser came up to me and asked me for my boarding pass.

He asked me to stand up and go to my correct seat.
I said no and he became upset.

He asked me again and I said no again.

He said but you have to and I said no because the seatbelt sign is on.

I will when we are airborne and the light has turned off.
He took half my drink away and I moved when the light was turned off.

That is one way to do it.

I got caught !!!!!!!
But only because SQ names there Business Class passengers by name.

It worked fine for me on Turkish Airlines from China to Istanbul.

Good Luck

Greetings:

Free upgrades are hard to get as stated by some of the above posts. The next best is to upgrade at a low price. Airlines such as National and America West have programs if there are seats open in first class a coach passenger on any ticket type pays a reasonable fee to upgrade to first. TWA had this program for years and in the past three years I've flown first class with TWA all but once on a low cost coach ticket. TWA charged a maxium of $250 to upgrade to first. For most trips it only cost me $120. National charges $75 to upgrade from coach to first from JFK-LAS. As always ask when you check in how much it costs to upgrade, it maybe lower then you realize.

Thanx
Tom

Best way to get a guaranteed upgrade is to contact your local ticket agent, and BUY A FIRST-CLASS TICKET.

You shouldn't ever expect an upgrade. If you get one, good for you, but don't plan to get something for nothing.

The only people deserving of a first class seat are those who make a contribution to the airline. Either by paying the price and buying the first class ticket, or by making a lifelong contribution to the airline buy earning miles.

That should be "or by making a lifelong contribution to the airline by earning miles"

Buy, by, bi... can't ever get the difference these days. Big grin

Or by making the lifelong contribution of working there! Non-reving is the greatest. Just non-reved to MCO from BOS and back, down was in the jumpseat which sucked, coming home was first. Total cost $18.

Yep, that too... sorry I forgot to mention it.  Smile

Although w/ the 20% cuts, and the increasing load factors, I hear it is more difficult to non-rev than pre-9/11.

Well said KDCA4life! You should not expect something for nothing.

Herman, what was 'juvenile' about my post? Just pointing out that you shouldn't expect what you don't pay for. Yes, free upgrades do happen and good luck to those that receive them, but they happen at the airline's convenience, and not yours...

Herman,
If your PTV happened to be broken on that day, and Y class is full (and J isn't of course), then tell an FA that your PTV is broken. He or she will reset it and if it still doesn't work, call the SAME one back again and tell her it's still not working and there ya go...most probably you'll be upgraded.

This does not work on short flights because they do not turn on the PTV (or at least KrisWorld is officially not supposed to be turned on).
