CI/AE MD-11 Crash In Hong Kong *few Years Back*

Fri Jan 11, 2002 6:21 pm

I would just like to let you know about a video I had the chance to see.

The video is taken from an approach road to 25L at CLK and shows aircraft trying to land during the Typhoon that B-150 (CI/AE MD-11) crashed in. Its only a few minutes long and show's a QF744, CX A333, CX 773 and then the landing of B-150.

All seems to be OK till just before touchdown when the plane drops like a brick on to the runway from what only seems to be a few meteres . The first thing you see is a flash of flames from the inner wing followed by a huge fire ball and black smoke, within a second you see the left wing going over the top as the plane rolls over........, as this is happening you can see the nose of a CX 777 at the holding point. I can only try to guess the shock of the crew and passengers of this CX aircraft as this crash takes place meters in front of them, not to mention all the passengers in the terminal.

After seeing the wreck and the crash I find it so amazing only 3-4 people died. A great deal of luck.

The person that took this video did not want it to be made available to news stations as he felt it was wrong (I DO NOT KNOW THE PERSON WHO TOOK IT) .

This video is not on the net and I do not have access to see it again.

Yes, I have also seen this chilling video. It's scary stuff, and definately not something I would wish to see in person.

I don't know if you saw the same version
or not... I did download a 11-minute
video of that landing/crash/fire from
Morpheus.(P2P) It is a 31.6MB MPEG file.
Search for "china air" or "air crash" and
set the search field to "at least 10MB"
video file. It appeared to be videotaped
by a window seat passenger. The video
quality is decent, but I could not
understand the words she was saying...
(probably Chinese or something...)
It took me a couple of days to download
the whole thing, as the uploader seemd to
have a very slow connection...

The video is not released to the general public and I would be surprised if there was a copy in the public domain. It is videoed by one of our pilots from his car as the aircraft fly overhead towards the threshold.

I'll look for the Morpheus

The one seen on the news was taken by a passenger out of a window as they were taxiing past, after the incident. The video that I am HKGSpotty are talking about is one where it actually crashes on tape.

Here is the link to a page w/video of the CAL plane approaching and then going behind buildings. It doesnt show the actual crash, but it does show a very unstable and fast approach. This video is from the BBC but its not at the BBC site.

click below...
http://www.agrosz.com/md11/incidents.html

There are a few other things on this page including an interesting shot of the reconstructed Swissair MD-11 that crashed off Peggy's Cove in 1998. I havent ever seen photos of it so it was interesting.

Morpheus can be downloaded from
cnet.com, here's the link:

http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1896420-100-6525083.html

As with any other peer-to-peer sharing
network, it takes a little time/patience
to locate the exact file you want.

By the way, the one I downloaded was
definitely different. It is from a passenger
windown of a aircraft on the taxiway. The
original poster said his video was shot
by a pilot...

Woodsboy,

I saw the video footage, and the footage is of aircraft going around at Kai Tak!!!!! I saw this footage years ago when the China Airlines 744 went into the harbour at Kai Tak. Strange for the BBC to use completely wrong footage!!!

Can people please listen.

We are talking about the Mandarin MD-11 that crashed at CLK. Not the video of an MD-11 trying to land in KAI TAK !!!!. Like CXFlyboy said it is strange that the BBC made such a mistake.

The video we are talking about is the most detailed crash video I've ever seen. You see the whole plane explode.

Cathay Pacific,

Sorry, I'm not trying to tease people. I was only saying what I had seen. The same way I post what I've seen during a trip to the airport.

As CXFlyboy said its not something you want to see. I was a little speechless after I saw it.

Damn, I'd like to see it.........and then probably never dare to fly again!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently, it really was a miracle that there were so few casualties (sad as it was).

Bluewhite,

I saw it because I had the chance, not because I had to see it. It was very interesting to have the chance to see it but at the same time it gives you a very funny feeling knowing that you are watching three people die.

Whats interesting is watching it happen at a place I know so well, you know the location because you have been there so many times.

If I ever saw this kind of thing in person I'm not sure how I would handle it.

On June 6th 1994 I almost saw VR-HYU of DragonAir crash, that had me shaking. Have you seen the Accident Investigation report for that ??. They landed on the 4th try and already told the tower they would have to ditch if they could not make it. Even when it landed it went accross the grass and stopped on a taxiway !!!.

The Dragonair did not land during a typhoon. It had some sort of a flap problem, and if I remember correctly, has differing flap settings on the different sides of the aircraft. I'm probably wrong, but control difficulties anyway.

They attempted various approaches but had to go-around each time. In the end they were very low on fuel and the pilot just had to put it down, even if it was not a stable approach. They touched down and immediately veered off the runway, across the grass, heading straight for the harbour. Luckily the pilot managed to turn it onto the parallel taxiway and stop. They stopped in something like 300M.

HKGSpotter1 got the whole thing on his camera and the photos are in the back of the accident report.

I remember watching a TG MD11 shave off its port side winglet at Kai Tak (from the old obsvn deck in the early 90's). I do remember my heart in my mouth as I watched him come in high and wide, and lose height rapidly and unevenly, before hitting the deck. I did think it was going to flip over, such was the violence of the landing! There are a few other vivid memories, mostly from Kai Tak, and I actually just missed seeing the AE M11 crash by a couple of minutes. I saw more of the fuselage later - as I said, a freaking miracle.

I haven't seen the KA accident report - ('94) was it? You've been spotting here for awhile!

I was at the airport the day the KA A320 made its bad landing, my photos are in the accident report.

I've been spotting in Hong Kong since October 1992.
