Delta Colors To Appear On Air France Concorde?

Fri Aug 06, 1999 1:39 pm

Profitable Concorde To Remain

Air France's Concorde, riding a two-year wave of profitability, will continue flying scheduled service indefinitely, according to Pascal de Izaguirre, executive VP-the Americas. He also said that under the new alliance with Delta, the two carriers are discussing putting Delta's code on Concorde flights, which operate only between New York and Paris.

This was reported in Aviation Daily. I e-mailed Delta reguarding this and they added that a Delta crew is due to begin training in France to operate it. Also, in the near future Delta colors could also appear on it.

I'll believe that when I see it.

Hi

There was a rumour a few years ago about Virgin leasing an AF Concorde.

This never materialised.

Yes, but Virgin and BA haven't exactly been on friendly terms. I'm sure a phone call from London to Paris could have stopped that deal....

Air France are NEVER going to let a foreign airline's crew operate their baby. Especially an American crew. National pride is at stake. Anyway, Air France (and BA) crews have a couple of decades of experience with this very unique aircraft which has many very different operating factors (off the top of my head: sunspots, radiation, skin heating up, fuel load heating up etc). Why hand that lot over to a TriStar driver? You wouldn't sleep well at night. AF and BA are only ever going to let other airlines get the Concorde on an ACMI deal - providing Aircraft, Crew, Maintenence and Insurance. Delta would have to be letting the Air France executive board free unlimited sex with Miss Atlanta 1999 and her sister to even discuss painting one side in Delta livery. Air France flatter their alliance partner by even allowing a code share.

Not so fast gentlemen. In the late '70s Singapore Airlines had a Concorde in their livery for a short time, albeit on one side only. And Braniff airlines started Concorde service from January '79 through to May '80 on the Dallas-London and Dallas-Paris via Washington leasing aircraft from both European carriers. They were about to get the same treatment as Singapore but fate intervened. In fact, there was a BA concorde in the paint shop ready for the new braniff livery when the agreement was cancelled by Braniff due to high fuel costs and low demand. And you can see why. The Braniff flights from Dallas to Washington were hard to sell because of the sonic boom ban. The Dallas to Washington leg was subsonic but the ticket prices weren't.

Oneworld Concorde?

Hmmmm... if AF would do that for DL, then there are no holds barred for BA to do the same for any of it's oneworld partners (American, Cathay, Finnair, Qantas). Or even better, paint an entire plane in oneworld colors (like the Star Alliance does) and use it on routes all over the place, although it would use BA cockpit crews.
