Delta Family Affair In Cockpit

Sat Jan 12, 2002 4:07 pm

I was on Delta flight 1980 from PDX to ATL on Monday, January 7, 2002. This was a 767-300ER flight and was commanded by Captain Horton and his First Officer whose last name was Horton as well. During the flight the Captain announced that he was flying with his son, something unusual at Delta. In all my years of flying I've never experienced this. Has anyone ever experienced something like this or even an all female flight crew?

Hey......

Too bad I didn't know you were here in PDX... I would have liked to meet you!

Anyway, yes, I have flown on a UA A320 where the Captain and First Officer were father and son. Never on Delta though.

Yeah, I would have liked to met you too. I think I looked your name up in the Delta Directory once when the last L1011 flight festivities were going on. Maybe one day we will meet. I work in Tech Ops at the OCC and DNTC but I'm flying every weekend; just a part time Atlantan really.

A Family Affair In Cockpit

Sat Jan 12, 2002 4:39 pm

United Family Affair: On Oct 29th 1999 Captain Joy Klopfer was the mom flying with her First Officer son Glenn Klopfer on a B767. They were the first mother son cockpit crew.

Lucy and Hedley Tardrew of Virgin Atlantic Airways flew the First Wide-body flight of a married cocpit crew in July, 1996; 747-200; LHR-SFO-LHR

Also, Captain Claudia Jones-Sorenson often flew with her husband, First Officer Fred Sorenson for Southwest Airlines before she took early retirement. He always used to say over the P.A. "This is the First Officer speaking, today your aircraft is under the command of my wife Captain Claudia Sorenson....and yes folks, it's just like at home- She's the boss!"

Interestingly, Claudia and her step daughter Cathy Jones (whom she taught to fly) were the first 'mother & daughter' employed with an airline in the US.

I knew Claudia Jones-Sorensen and her daughter Kathy when I leved in Las Vegas. The family operated a flight school at the North Las Vegas airport. I thought Claudia worked for Contenental. Kathy was hired in the class just prior to mine at Western and went to Delta with the merger. I am very surprised to hear that they ended up at Southwest.

Freedom Air used an all female crew on a flight from Hamilton, NZ to Sydney about 18 months back.
This was cabin crew as well as flight crew.

At AirMalta we had two brothers fly a B737-300, an entire crew with the same surname - Debono (which was organised by the oldest Purser with AirMalta - Reggie Debono) and I flew with all female crew (cockpit and cabin) once. All female, except myself that is.
