Raiders Aircraft To Pvd?

Mon Jan 14, 2002 5:53 am

Over on the Yahoo! PVD Club we're debating what type of aircraft the Oakland Raiders will use in flying to Providence later this week. I am guessing, in part because OAK is a heavy UAL mx base, that it will probably be a 767 variant...either a -200 or a -300. It would be wonderful to see a 777 take the team, inasmuch as this would provide great photo ops for the folks at PVD, and a bit more sick bay room for the losing team as they fly back to OAK...their victory over the Jets a forgotten abberation.

You PVD photographers are in for a treat. The Raiders should be flying in on a Hawaiian Airlines DC-10-10, as this is the second season that Hawaiian has had the contract to transport the Raiders.

Last year when the Raiders where in town here in PIT, it was a bit odd seeing the Hawaiian DC-10 sitting at the terminal among all of the US Airways planes.

Yep, I'll agree with the Hawaiian DC-10 call. The Raiders chartered into MSY a year ago to face the Saints.

Can the runways at PVD even handle an aircraft the size of a DC-10?

PVD's runway 5R/23L is 7166 ft. Compare this to Kahului, Maui (OGG)'s runway 2/20, the longer one, at 7000 feet. I have seen DC-10-30s, 777-200s, and A330-200s operating flights from OGG nonstop to the US mainland. So a Hawaiian DC-10-10 should be adequate, especially if you consider that the aircraft will not be full. If necessary, Hawaiian could use a DC-10-30 instead.

As far as I know Usairways85, yes there should have been a Hawaiian DC-10 at PHL.

The runways should be able to handle the -10...barely. Up here in Manchester, NH we have FedEx DC-10s, A300-600s by Fed Ex and UPS, and our strip is about 7,500 feet (now being extended to 9,500). Maybe closer to departure (Thursday?) someone can verify by checking to see if there are any Hawaiian DC-10s at OAK.

Along the same lines, what does the Baltimore Ravens usually charter, as they will be in Pittsburgh Next Week.
Thanks

Baltimore looked VERY good today against Miami. Pittsburgh will have its hands fuller with Baltimore than they ever would have against Miami.

It is interesting, but the chances are there that New England may host two more games...next weekend and the following weekend...in a stadium that should really be underneath a wrecking ball right now. Plans called for demolition to begin a couple days after the last game at Foxboro was played. And when the season started, many folks felt that this 'last game' might have been the one played there several weeks ago.

Notice to wrecking crew: hold off till late January.

Usairways85,
I was the FO on the Raiders charter to PHL, and yes, we had a DC-10 there for a couple days (N127AA). We flew in the evening of Oct 26th, and left after the game on the 28th. We parked in the far northeast corner of the airport near an abandoned hangar. It was a great trip - sorry your Eagles lost  Smile

Hawaiian has the contract for flying the Raiders to all their away games, including the Super Bowl if they get that far.

I haven't seen the pairings for the trip for the New England game, but I'm not sure we'd be going into PVD. That's a fairly short runway, and would have to be a -30. It's just too short for a -10. And if you're hanging around OAK looking for our plane, look quick. We ferry up from LAX and pick up the team in OAK. We're usually on the ground there less than two hours.

OK, found the info. The flight is a DC-10-10, and will be going to BOS, not PVD. It's scheduled to arrive Thursday the 17th, at 2235.

The game is Saturday, and on cross-country flights, they don't want to get in the night before the game, so that is why they're going today.

This aircraft (HAL DC-10) has special Oakland Raiders decals now applied to both sides of the aircraft, lower forward fuselage.

The Eagles have in the past chartered Northwest planes. Woulnd't be surprised if they did that again this year.

The 49ers usually use United.

Of course this is the one weekend I can't get down to BOS....

Go Pats (and Baltimore so we can beat you at Foxboro's last hurrah)

Hey, Hal...or anyone else with the answer. I've often wondered what flight numbers or designations are given to teams when they charter a road game. Since I live under the outbound, eastbound route from DFW, I listen to ATC transmissions on a scanner. I've never know what to listen for when trying to identify the Cowboys, Stars, Mavericks, etc.

We just use regular flight numbers and the Hawaiian call sign. I think the Raiders trips are the 900 series this year, with 900 the first trip, 901 the second, etc.
