Heathrow's 3rd Runway - Runway 23

Mon Jan 14, 2002 6:20 am

Hi there!

Has anyone seen Heathrow's cross runway, Runway 23, being used recently? I can't find any photos of aircraft landing on it on Airliners.net. From memory, this is the short runway used when crosswinds are strong and is around 6,500ft. Rumour has it that 744s land on it when the wind is strong.

Any comments?

Cheers

And - has anyone who's spotted at Heathrow ever seen a plane land in the opposite direction - on 05? I too spent many years a lonnnggg time ago spotting there, and never saw this happen. Arrivals onto 23 were usually great fun, only in terrible weather, would love to have landed on it.

Hey there,
Runway 05 is disused, i'm not sure of the reasons why, but it is a disused runway in that direction.

Cheers,

Jeff.

O5 could be disused because its T4 is right next to it.So when ever a plane is pushed back its tail is only about 20m away from the runway.

I am not debating the length of Rwy 23 but it seems to me that 6500ft is not enough for a B744 to land on.

Within the 15 years that I spent spotting at LHR, only once did I ever see an aircraft land on 05. This was around 1977/8, when out of the blue we saw an Iberia DC10 on short final whilst standing on the QB.

I havent been spotting at Heathrow since long before the days of T4, so that can't be it, just found it odd that theyc ould land in one direction and not the other.

According to www.worldaerodata.com you can still take-off from 23 if you are a prop! Correct about 05 though, it doesn't appear on any air maps. By the way, If you approach 23 you fly directly over RAF Northolt. I seem to recall someone saying that it is most likely to be used in November...

I have only ever seen 1 aircraft land on that runway and it was a Canadian DC-10 on an emergency. Other than that I have never seen it being used on a full scale operationl day.

I think the runway cannot be used any longer because of the proximity of T4's remote stands.

05 is disused -- T4, cargo buildings

23 can't be used when either a/c are at the Tango stands (the large face of T4), OR a/c of a certain size are at the Tango stands. I'll check later.

I think it is still used occasionally as an emergency bad weather runway.

Do a search for B707-465, VR-BBZ, and later G-ARWE, of Cunard Eagle, later to BOAC. Flight BA712, April 1968 on the first leg of LHRZHR on it's way to SYD. From memory it literally finished it's active life on 023.
