Boeing/Airbus Intrigue From Taiwan

Sat Aug 07, 1999 12:48 am

I thougth this would've been a hot topic by now. You guys need to check the great stories on Yahoo or other service. Just hit Boeing under the "news stories" search topic and read away. I posted my take on this story in a post titled "news of the day". This story is designed for this forum. It has all the ingredients for a record thread. Looks like Boeing planted a story in the local press in order to get the White House involved in trying to save a 777 order from CAL. Remember MAC's post on this several weeks ago? Very interesting stuff. Looks like it's too late for Boeing now, but an interesting tactic nonetheless. Still, 17 744 freighter orders ain't bad.

Are you talking about this?
"TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Taiwan's flagship airline apparently is canceling an order for 12 Boeing 777s in protest of the Clinton administration's mainland China policy. Boeing had been expecting the $2 billion deal to be formally announced at any time. It has been working on it since Taiwan's China Airlines signed a letter of intent to buy the jets in 1995. China Airlines is expected to announce a major purchase of A-340 planes from Airbus Industrie instead, as early as next week.
China Airlines is still expected to announce the purchase of 13 Boeing 747s, but Boeing is locked in a fierce competition with Airbus between the slightly smaller 777s and A-340s."

If is this you're talking about, it seems to be a little different. I don't make comments on this because it will be just speculation.

This is what I'm referring to. The story appeared two days ago in Seattle and was carried yesterday by AP and Reuters. This morning officials from CAL and the Taiwanese gov't denied the story was true and said a decision had already been made six weeks ago. I remember MAC's post about this. The story is intersting because if it was planted by Boeing, it suggests that the company is tryong to enlist Clinton's support for a last ditch effort to save the deal. The story itself does not make any sense from a timing or political perspective. The US just sold $500 MM worth of military hardware to Taiwan last week which enraged the mainlanders. Mirage, are you a stock investor? I only ask because you refuse to "speculate". To me speculation is the spice of life. Planes never would've flown if people didn't speculate.

he he he, stock investor.
No, I simply don't speculate because I don't have nothing to say, just that. I don't have enough inside knowledge about this to make comments. Aviation is a complex game with political decisions that we don't dream about.

Yes, looks like an order from CAL for Airbus.

Someone in the flight simulator has already designed a CAL A340 for FS98!!
