Scary Mary Schaivo's Background

Mon Jan 14, 2002 9:36 am

Although she is often trotted out by the networks as an expert on aviation safety to scare the bejabbers out of an ignorant public, I have heard that Scary Mary has no aviation expertise and her stint at the DOT had nothing to do with aviation. Anybody know the facts?

Other than mis-spelling her name (it's Schiavo), you pretty much nailed it.

Guy's check your facts. I had the woman as a professor here at OSU. She has been involved in aviation since she was 18. She has worked for the FAA, NTSB, and DOT. She nailed ValuJet before anyone did in regards to there mishandling of hazardous cargo. Check your facts before you go spoutin off. Not that I care, just get the info.

This is the same moron who tells an ignorant public that an Airbus is five times more safe than a Boeing because a Boeing "has one computer" and the Airbus "has five computers". According to Schiavo, the Boeing 777 is unsafe because "no prototype was built" (Dassault CATIA software was extensively used for computer modelling), that GPS cockpit equipment bounces signals off a satellite, that oxygen is added to outside air so that cabin air "will not be too thin", and that cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders are safety enhancement devices.

Another nugget: any aircraft more than 10 years old is inherently unsafe because of its age and no other factor.

Maybe "Scary Mary" should read the airliners forum, she may learn something
