Escape Hatch?

Hi everyone,

What is this "Escape hatch" in this photograph all about? Where does it lead to or what and when is it used? Whst is it used for?

That is no escape hatch. It leads to the Lower 41 section.

It's a hatch that allows access into the aircraft's "E & E" (electronics and equipment) bay. I can't think of a jetliner that doesn't have them, and the 747's is so high off the ground that a ladder is included. The E & E bay on narrow-bodied aircraft isn't accessible from the cockpit (can't think of any, anyways), but it may be on some widebodies. I recall in the Eastern 401 L-1011 Everglades crash that the F/E was down in the E & E at some point, and I presume theirs was also accessable from the ground. Don't know about the DC-10, 747, and widebody Airbus types, but I'm sure someone else can/will chime in...

On a side note,

are there any pictures of the inside of this "E&E" room?

I'd be interesting in seeing it.

Access from cabin/cockpit is possible on 1011, DC10, 747, 767 and 777 for sure. 737, 757 and 319/320 - no.
