Southern California/my Trip

Sat Aug 07, 1999 4:29 am

I'm going to CA very soon! i wanted to ask anyone here if you know any real good spotting areas around LAX, LGB, SNA, and even SAN. Also, this is for any pilots who have flown into LAX from Texas or that direction - particularly any flying for CO. What areas does the route take you over? Like, do you fly over Phoenix, or any mountain areas, do you fly over any major cities along the way, etc. I was wondering what to expect from the view, since I have a good window seat!!
thanks

Hey - I used to live in Houston and have flown that trip from Texas to California many many times. Now I live just about 5 miles from SNA!!!

Anyway at LAX there are many great spots to spot planes. I will list a few.

1)Go inside the International terminal and up the stairs in front of you. Once at the top you will see a big room with windows running all along it, and chairs and stuff. This room gives you a view of the entire Q and S taxiways. I have gotten many gerat pictures and reg. numbers from this area.

2)I am not sure about the directions but if you drive down by the end of 24L and 24R there is an awesome park there. It is right across from an In and Out. The planes fly right overhead! It is amazing to see a 747 or any plane from thsi hieght and angle.

3)Go to the top of the International terminal parking structure. From there you have a nice areal veiw of some action at LAX.

4)I have never acually been to this area but have heard about it. at the very far end of 25L/R and 24L/R are some hills. beyond those hills i think i heard is a parking lot or something right on the beach. I have heard you can get soem nice pictures from there.

As far as the flight...It is very enjoyable. You fly over very differant scenery areas. Deserts, Farmlands, Cities, Mountain ranges, and many more areas...I think you will enjoy it alot. E-mail me with any questions. Maybe we can meet sometime there

one of my favorite viewing areas is at In and Out Burger
on sepulveda at the approach of runways 24
also the Proud Bird on aviation blvd near 25R&L
the most thrilling spot is at the limosine parking lot at the threshhold of runway 24L planes land right over your head, very close....enter through arrivals 1st turn off before teminal one, then follow sound of planes to runway fence ...awesome spot, bring ear plugs!
there are many other spots, but these are my favorite
ps. burbank, ontario & john wayne arent very exciting..

thanks for the tip! I was also wondering what the approach into LAX is like - since most flights land to the west (correct me if I'm wrong) - do you get a good view of the city? or any particular landmarks? I will be sitting in 29F on a 757 so in that situation I'd be facing north on the approach.

I aws in a hold over LA on a BA fligth and you could see the hollywood sign and down town LA. I would recommend siting on the right of the aircraft as that is generally the best. But you might not be able to see much due to the smog.
