Cancun International Question?

Tue Jan 15, 2002 10:03 am

Hi everyone,
A question to anyone who has flown to cancun. Was wondering if there are any good spotting areas first of all since I am a fanatic when it comes to aircraft photography, and also if there is a main terminal there, what is the airport like there in general? Will be going in 4 weeks and want as much info as possible.

Thanks for any info

Adjacent to the restaurant (in the secure area) there is an outside deck / observation area where you can see a number of the parked aircraft, and also see the active (obliquely).

The aircraft you´ll see will be :

Lots of MX 727´s, some Fokker 100 and 320´s and one or two 757´s. AM uses DC-9´s and MD80´s (almost all series). Aviacsa´s old 737´s. Allegro 727´s.

As for larger aircraft :
BA 777 flies to CUN on Monday and Friday (noon)
CONDOR 767´s
AIR EUROPA 767 arrives every sunday
maybe, if you are lucky, could catch an Air Europe 777 or LTU´s 330´s.
VARIG and LAN CHILE 767´s.

AA, CO and DL fly either 737,727, MD80´s or 757´s to CUN

Have a nice trip

I wouldn't go to Cancun to spot (although there were a nice variety of aircraft when I went). I go there to get wasted and party.

Just a little aside...back to the topic now

You could see B767/300ER from Italian charters as follow:

Mon: Lauda Air Italy
Tue: 2 x Air Europe
Wed.: Air Europe
Thu: Eurofly (full Alitalia colour)
Fri: Lauda Air
Sat: Air Euope

Some of the Air Europe flights may be operated with B777/200ER.

I tried to spot at CUN last May and it was extremely difficult to find a nice spot outside the secure area. If you walked to the left or right of the terminalbuilding, views were blocked by cargo areas and buildings or roads weren´t accesible. I was able to spot some planes far away when they took off.
But there are some interesting aircraft apart from the ones mentioned; it´s a base of Aerocaribe so you will see some Jetstreams, maybe their final and rare Fairchild F-27 on the Cozumel shuttle and some DC-9s. Aviacsa also brings in 727s. US carriers come with interesting equipment, like DL 764s, CO 753s, ATA Tristars. TACA flies 737s. Enjoy your trip!

I agree about what others have said about Cancun. The light aircraft ramp is best seen from an arriving or departing aircraft.

You might like to know also that a banner towing operation, with microlights on floats operates from very close to the Giant Mexican flag on the causeway at Cancun.

The outdoor deck by the restaurant has been closed to make space for retail. I was there in Nov and it wasn't accessible.

The best spot in the terminal for spotting is in the main terminal, not the charter terminal facing the runway. Most arrivals for CUN arrive on RWY12 and will have to taxi past to get to their gates.

Never tried spotting outside the terminals but there doesn't look to be much access based on what I've seen.

Along the beach by the Moon Palace you can get some decent views of departing aircraft and when they occasionaly arrive on 34 you can view arrivals.

Most of the hotels along the Zona Hotelera don't offer any decent views from the beach.

Have too much tequilla for me,

Outside the terminal you can't see anything only the planes on the left side of the main terminal, but inside of the main terminal you can get great views of arriving and departing aircraft. Go to the second floor of the main terminal cause on the 1st floor you'll just
see the landing gear of the airplanes at gate 2 and 3.
Have fun and enjoy your stay in Cancun

Hello Spotter,

I wish I could leave in CUN for spotting, I know that in stats of year 2001 Cancun was declared the 2nd most important airport in Mex, handling around 450,000 operations... here at Mex in all the year we have around 950,000 operations 1 acft every 2 minutes... so CUN is also solicitated and just to give you and idea of the heavy traffic in the area.. also they were planning soon to build the 2nd rwy.

Hope you spend a good time.. and happy spotting!

Also, a few gates require a bus trip to one of those old fashioned stairs to the plane. Believe it or not, I'm such a geek that the air stairs were one of the highlights of my vacation!!
