3 LH 742 In HHN

Tue Jan 15, 2002 8:04 pm

I don't know if it has been reported before, but I just got photos of a LH 747-200 being scrapped in Hahn (HHN). I encouraged the photographer to upload them here. Titles/logos are removed, engines and gear gone.
I checked and found out that D-ABYQ, -YR and -YX are all in HHN.
I'll try to visit the place this weekend.

One thing is strange, actually the other three are supposed to be in Marana, but the system I looked into says Hahn... well at least one is photo-proofed.

Hi Konstantin,

I thought that Lufthansa had sold at least some of the -200's to other airlines but it's really no good news that they are being scrapped now.
Well just as long YM is still doing ok  Nuts

Hi Konstantin

According to LH Technik the big scrapp parts (sucha s aluminium and other recyclable materials) will be transfered to a big industrial scrapeyard near Offenbach.
I'l ask my Lufthansa "Informanden" at FRA for further details.

OK, one more update:
Currently only -YQ in HHN (parted out)
-YM and -YR will move from FRA to HHN (I guess same fate...sorry, Max!)
Three others in MZJ, the two still flying will go to MZJ as well.

I hope this is correct now!

Is there any chance to get some small pieces of the scrapped planes? Or will the SkyShop bring out a new edition of former 747-200s...? A nice desk made out of parts or so... But if they do I guess nobody will be able to pay it...

Shame on those that made that decision to chop them up...

Why are they scrapping the birds ? They cannot be that run down that LH could not sell them to, say, Kabo Air, European Aviation, Air Atlanta etc. Maintained by LH Technik, they for sure must be in perfect condition and they are not that old. Quite surprising that all LH can get out of them is the price of some tons of metal.

In order to sell them you´d probably have to wait some time during which you have to pay the storage cost.
As opposed to that, scrapping is easy money right now.

In essence, another one of those short sighted decisions propelled by purely shareholder value oriented thinking.

According to Bill Harms´ website, former D-ABZE (which was used on the FRA-YYZ-FRA route until a few days ago) is now with Air Madagascar...
So D-ABZH seems to be the only 742 which is still in service for LH, although I´m not sure whether the FRA-YYZ-FRA leg can be covered by only one airplane, so maybe they already use an A340-300.

I don´t know about ZE´s fate personally but here is the link to Bill Harms´ website:
http://www.bird.ch/bharms/asr_sh00.htm

You can find an Air Madagascar 747-200. Its former registration is D-ABZE.

By the way: LH has received their newest B747-400 (D-ABTK). It was delivered on 12/19/01.
Does anybody know if it is already in passenger service?
I can´t wait for the first photos of this new bird.

The Air Madagascar story is wrong, AFAIK.
BTW, it was a different carrier than Air Mad who wanted to lease it, but the deal fell throug´h.

I've seen -TK a few days ago. It's not in revenue service yet.

Taken apart by bulldozers in a more brutal way than at the usual boneyards. :-(
I wonder if it still makes sense to go to HHN at all.

Apparently, there's a pilot initiative to save at least one of them.

I was at HHN today, all I could see were a few piles of scrap. Very sad sight... And the photos wouldn't qualify for this site, I guess, as it's unidentifiable as an aircraft. The scrapping site is easy to view (east of the terminal), and photos can be taken through the fence. However, I don't know if the second one has been already scrapped too. There's only one large hangar which could house a 747.

The three a/c scrapped at HHN were sold by Lufthansa to Lufthansa Technik for parting out. So legally, all this has nothing to do with Lufthansa (the carrier). The other five have not been sold and will go to the desert.

Do you guys know about that German couple that collect REAL aircraft ?. They live in a big house and the grounds are full of planes and helicopters.

They even have a TU-134 and VC-10. Will one of the LH 747's go to them ???

This is the museum in Hermeskeil (roughly between Hahn Airport and Luxembourg, in the middle of nowhere).
Nice museum though, but as it looks right now they wouldn't have the space for it, and road transport of a 747 would be difficult to such a remote place.
Here's the VC10 and other Hermeskeil goodies:

ZE was in YYZ on Jan 21...Si it's still going!

A couple of weeks ago, a Lufthansa source gave Jan 22nd as the last day of 747-200 operations; so you might have seen her the last time...

Just to clarify, I did not mean to say that all three LH Technik aircraft have already been scrapped, but they were definitely sold for parting out. If Lufthansa (the carrier) wants to donate an aircraft, they would probably choose one of the two aircraft still in service as it hardly makes sense to bring back one to Germany from the desert. Btw, I spoke to a LH 747-200 pilot recently (two weeks ago) and he knew nothing about a -200 going to a museum.

Lufthansa's Flight Engineers

Tue Jan 22, 2002 10:41 pm

With the last Lufthansa Boeing 747-200 leaving the fleet in January and everybody mourning their departure (see the "Three LH742s at HHN thread), I am wondering what is going to happen to the last Lufthansa flight engineers - if I have it correct, the B747-200 was the last Lufthansa aircraft to have a 3rd cockpit crew member. Until last fall, Lufthansa had 8 B747-200s in the fleet; I don't know how many flight engineers are required for 8 aircraft but I guess quite a few. What is going to happen to those guys - I mean the pilots can be type-rated for the B744 or the A340, but for sure not all the engineers can join Lufthansa cargo (which still has a few B747-200) as engineers. Any information on that ?

Vfw614,

Did the pilot tell you what he would do? Is he going to retire early or switch to the 744/A340? I mean it seems as if LH has more then plenty of pilots now compared with summer 2001.

YM To Sinsheim On Monday!

Wed Jan 23, 2002 4:45 am

no speculation anymore! YM will have her last flight on Monday and can be seen in the museum in Sinsheim very soon.

for our german speaking readers (sorry, no time for translation)
Sehr geehrter Herr XXX,

Auto + Technik Museum Sinsheim

----------------------------------------------------
Das größte Passagierflugzeug der Welt kommt ins Technik Museum Speyer

Speyer.
