A318: She Flies!

Tue Jan 15, 2002 8:26 pm

Hi,
I just come back from Finkenwerder.
At this time, A318 makes her first flight. She took off at 10h11 (German time).
It should be a 3 and a half hour-flight. So I am waiting to see her on final from my office!
Personnally I was not able to take any picture, but there were so many people that I am sure we will get them soon.
It was really a great moment!
And remember, A318 is not only a shorter A319, as she integrates lots of innovative technologies (LASER welding...)

Am I the only person who, on seeing a picture of an A318 can't help but go "aaaaaah!"

Or do I need some help?

There was a clip of the takeoff run in the ARD news at 15:00. It´s not yet on their website (http://tagesschau.de/), but it will probably appear there in a few hours.

Eal401, yeah, the A318 is kinda "Awww!"

Anyone remember that computer generated fake A317? It had about three pax windows. Very amusing.

Personally, I can't wait to see this baby in Air Canada colours. It is great to hear that the first flight was a success.

Air Canada has ordered A318s?? Are they to be purchased or leased? When is delivery of the first A318 set for? You're right, this cute little Airbus baby would
indeed look cool in AC livery.

AC has not ordered any A318's. They have pending orders for A319, A320, and A340-500/600.

I would challenge your information. Air Canada does in fact have orders put in for the 318 to replace the Dc9 along with the 732. The rest of your statement is accurate.

ACG, you're wrong, as I just said in another post, AC does NOT have any 318 orders. Nothing specific is replacing the DC-9's (they are already gone btw, they are now only used as backup acft) or 732's. Sorry to burst your bubble, but as of right now, AC has said nothing about the 318.

The next Airbus to make a first flight will be the A340-500. I'm not sure when this will be, however it should be soon.

ACG: I would check you facts before challenging anybody's post. Unless you have internal info that hasn't been announced.

This plane is the "puppy" of the Airbus fleet... looks kinda neat in the pics I've seen on some German sites. I hope Air Canada orders them someday.. if they ever get their finances straightened out.

Does anybody have concrete information on who the latest A318 cancellations were?

At the moment, I'm assuming 12 of the 22 cancelled aircraft are from the GATX-Flightlease cooperation, which is now DOA. This would also account for the 1 missing customer. The other 10 cancellations I'm assuming are also from a lessor, most probably ILFC or GECAS.

Can anybody confirm/deny these assumptions?

Has it struck anyone else too that her tail is huge?
Or am I just seeing it this way?
It almost seems like its bigger than the whole aft section of the plane.

Where were the orders from and when were they placed? I can't find anything on what you're claiming. It has long been known that AC was taking hard looks at both the 717 and A318 but I thought that had been postponed.

By the way, I Love A304;
I remember reading somewhere that the tail is bigger due to reasons I don't recall.

Very nice video, and nice photo peter.

I think it's typical for a tail to be heightened when a fuselage is shortened, isn't it? I think the 747SP had a bigger tail. What about the L1011-500?
Next flight.... who knows.

A318 Larger Tailfin

Thu Jan 17, 2002 1:42 am

AWspicious: I remember reading somewhere that the tail is bigger due to reasons I don't recall.

With the shorter fuselage, there is also a shorter lever for the vertical stabilizer. That´s compensated by making the tailfin larger. (The A138 tailfin is indeed larger than those of their longer cousins.)

But will the tailfin stay attached?

Well let's hope the tailfin stays attached, sure!

Anyway, biggie-looking vertical stabilizers for stubby plane variants-- like the 74SPs, and shortie 737s-- are not all that uncommon. Gotta get that turning moment, as Klaus points out!

I thought "Li'l Stubby" (the 318) looked great, on that maiden flight take off. I hope the PW6000 fuel-burn concerns get straightened out fast though, and don't put a dent in any order delivery timetables, or even sales prospects, for the months ahead!
