USAirways Shuttle really let me down my last Shuttle flight from LGA - BOS. Because I fly frequently between LGA and BOS, I have purchased a "student" pack of tickets. These tickets included in the pack are relatively cheap, about 45 dollars each way. This price comes with a restriction of when you can fly with the ticket. However, MANY times in my past experience on the USAirways Shuttle, I have been able to make reservations over the phone and in person at the gate to fly during the restricted time period. Yesterday, I asked to make a reservation to fly the 5 o'clock shuttle. When the ticket agent on the phone realized I could not fly during this time period, he told me that if I got to LGA in time, they could put me on standby for the flight I wanted to take. He made me a reservation for the 7:00 shuttle, the earliest I could take, assuring me I would be put on standby for the earlier flight permitting that there were seats. This situation was fine with me. However, this information proved to be false. I arrived at LGA at 4:15 to make the 5:00 shuttle, well in time to make the plane. I told the agent that I had a reservation for the 7:00, but I told him I would like to make the 5:00. He said, "Nope, sorry, not with this ticket." I asked him if he would put me on standby for the 5:00. He said once again, "Nope, sorry, not with this ticket." I told him about the conversation I had on the phone about how if the plane had seats, they would put me on standby. I asked the agent if the plane was sold out. The answer was no. I had asked him once again if I could be put on standby, knowing that the plane was FAR from full. The answer once again was no. I spoke to his supervison who gave me a large amount of attitude. I explained to her the conversation I had on the phone with the ticket agent, along with the fact that I had routinely been allowed to take a plane outside the restricted time. She told me the plane was empty, but she could not put me on standby. When I asked her nicely once again, she got snippy and said, "Well, if everyone tried to do what you want to do now, everyone would buy cheap tickets and fly whenever they want to, and USAirways would lose money." Seeing I had no chance with the supervisor, I went back to a different ticket agent and I asked how much the step up would cost to make the earlier flight. I was told I would have to buy a whole new ticket for over 200 dollars! When I explained the situation to this ticket agent, he was sympathetic. He said that Delta Shuttle would accept my ticket and actually put me on standby for the time I wanted to. The agent admitted, "Yes, our policy is stupid, we have lost many customers to Delta Shuttle for our non-standby policy, but I do not make the decisions, the people upstairs sitting in the big leather chairs do." I took the shuttle bus to the Marine Air Terminal, explained my situation to the Delta Shuttle ticket agent who was extremely helpful and friendly. He said he was used to my situation, would put me on the 5:30 shuttle, and honor the remaining USAirways shuttle tickets I have. I enrolled with Delta SkyMiles on the spot. I will cancel my Silver Preferred Dividend Miles account and not give USAirways Shuttle any more business. They have lost yet another customer due to their non-standby policy.
P.S. I was surprised to find a better selection of magazines and newspapers, a less hectic gate area, and an actual meal on my dinner time Delta Shuttle flight. I would advise those contemplating looking for a shuttle service to steer clear of USAirways Shuttle. I apologize for the lengthy post, I just had to get this off my chest.
