AZ Suspending Lax!

Thu Jan 17, 2002 1:27 pm

Alitalia is suspending LAX as of 30Mar02, confirmed on thier website! This leaves just four US cities - Boston, Chicago, Miami, and New York City. Newark does resume, however on 01May02. In other news, for the summer, AZ will now send thier MD-11s to JFK and ORD in addition to MIA. BOS will remain a 763. Dissapointing to see them suspend LAX.

Probably yield. Also, my mistake, but AZ will use an MD-11 on BOS-MXP this summer as well.

The source was "Il sole 24 ore" the largest Italian economy paper in an article at the beginning of November.
Of course that was only an article not confirmed in any AZ official press realased, that's why I haven't talked before about it.<

As I reported over one month ago this bad news was talked since last november, but never confirmed with official press realased.

For all AZ fan I have a interesting news (still unconfirmed):
AF has showed a project to Italian govern to buy up to 20% of AZ. Also if it will happen a special plan to develop again the Rome FCO hub is ready.

Wow,
finally they recognize they high potential of FCO.
If really AZ and AF will have a stake exchange (with AF having the major one) maybe they could begin a collaboration also on O&M for their common fleet (A320, B777) and Alitalia could plan its future fleet requirement according to AF: A330-200 for long haul and A318 for short haul.

Ciao

The potential of the FCO hub is mainly for leisure traffic.
That's why they are thinking to follow the Qantas example of an leisure long-haul airline like Australian Airways. This is only a project at this time, but they are working. But untill the privatization and a new owner, nothing could happen.

A leisure airline like Australian Airways?
Do you mean a scheduled or a charter one?
Can you give me more infos about it?

Thanx

Technically, Alitalia Team is a "leisure" airline.

No,
Alitalia TEAM is a branch of the Alitalia Group with low job costs. Employees of the TEAM division have a different kind of contract. But the airline itself operates just like the mainline carrier: two class service and leisure as well as business destinations.

I have no more informations at the moment.

I think it should be something like a more low job cost than AZ team with more flexible contract.

It's sad!!!!

I thought AZ would have used its new 772s on MXP-LAX and MXP-SFO routes!!!!!

I think AZ is cutting too many routes!!!!!!!

Does anybody know where are now AZ 742s???

Thank you

Seems a bit strange to suspend the LAX service at the start of the summer schedule!!!

Does anybody else agree that this is a stupid idea based on the fact that they flew the route during the entire winter season, when traffic is always a lot more quiet, and then suspend the route at the start of the busy summer season, especially as traffic is starting to return after 9/11!!! and SFO is already suspended, they would probably have picked up a lot of traffic from thee rto LAX where it's easier just conect with a commuter to SFO!!

Just my Two Cents Worth!

Perhaps a seasonal (summer only) service LAX-FCO or LAX-MXP could work. Maybe UA could try this but since their LAX-CDG flight didn't work, I'm not sure Italy flights would do any better. Otherwise, it's still easy for passengers to make connections to Italy.

Do they still fly to Sydney ?.
They cancelled their flights after they gave the landin g rights to KLM.

KLM had 6 flights a week to Sydney, three via Amsterdam and Three via Milan.
