New Baggage Regulations

Thu Jan 17, 2002 10:00 pm

Just got an e-mail from Continental and this was one part of the message:

Effective January 18, 2002 the Federal Aviation Administration will require a positive bag match for travel within the U.S., its territories and commonwealths. Bags cannot be transported on the aircraft without confirmation that the customer has boarded the aircraft."

And this is NEW!? I thought this was always the case? And if it wasn't, I almost don't believe it. Actually, come to think of it, the two places I remember hearing about this most is one) in Toulouse, on my internship with Air France (anytime a pax didn't show, we had to go find his bags) and two) on our return LGW-BWI BA flight, one pax didn't show up therefore delaying us the time it took to find his bags.

Interesting this won't be in effect until tomorrow (18-1).

Funny thing, when I read about this....I remember having to do this at Reeve when I worked there five years ago.

So what about missed, changed connections... for example ->

When i was rerouted 2 weeks ago on Delta, my bags never made it with me. I had to divert to Cincinnati from Boston to fly home to London, but my bags stayed in Boston and went on the Boston flight. Delta told me at the time they'd try and get my bags to follow me, but doubted they would and we'd all meet up at the other end in London. Which we did, 2 days later. Thanx Delta.

So what happens? I have to fly back to where my bags are to "escort" them home??
Just wondering....

One would hope there would be a system to tag your bag to indicate that the bag is catching up with the passenger. It happens all the time and if Europe is already using the "positive bag match" system, then they must have a way of knowing if you have arrived and your bag hasn't. Let us hope the Americans are this smart.
