Abandoned CX L1011 At KUL In The Mid 80s

Sat Jan 19, 2002 7:08 pm

I was wondering if anyone would know anything about a Cathay Pacific tristar aircraft that was parked at the side of the runway in KUL somewhere in the 80s? As a kid, I would always ask my parents to take me to look at planes at the side of the runway and I always remembered this Cathay Pacific plane parked at the side... anyone here know anything about this plane and it's fate?

Thanks very much!

Is it? Well, I'm quite sure it was a Cathay Pacific aircraft. I was only 8 or 9 years old at that time, and it was ages ago...but i remember the green and white stripes on the plane. I could be wrong tho...

Maybe they just parked it there whenever it had a long layover at KUL?

Cathay never abandoned a TriStar at SZB (formerly KUL) as far as i know. CX720/721 used to operate to SZB daily but only went on to Penang on certain days - so it night-stopped at SZB on these days. Due to the constraints of space at SZB (which is why KUL was blueprinted and built - to all those who still winge that the new airport is a white elephant), CX's TriStar used to be parked at the far northern end of the airport by the runway for the night before it returned to service the next morning's HKG service.

You Probably Saw CX's 707

In the most part of 1980s there was a Cathay 707-351C (former NWA) parked at a open ground roughly 3 miles from the old KUL. The story behind the old 707 is that some dude bought the hulk of the retired 707 and planned to turn it into a restaurant. It sat there for, I think, 8 to 10 years before someone bought it up and sold it for scrap. I live in PJ which is just 2 miles away form the old 707.

Thanks very much for all the info. I'm sorry I thought it was a Tristar, but it was really a long time ago, and I was pretty young at that time.

Triple Seven,

That's exactly what I thought my mum told me before - that is was going to be some restaurant or something...now wouldn't that be exciting??
