Why No Combi's Allowed In U.S.?

Thu Jan 24, 2002 10:33 am

This question came to me from the Hawaiian/Aloha post posted earlier. I know that Alaskan and Hawaiian/Aloha fly combi's, but they have special waivers from the FAA. Why does the FAA frown on combi operations by US carriers? Seems pretty damn stupid to me. I know Fed Ex/UPS and others would hate the idea, but why does tht FAA have the position on combi's that it does?

Anyone?

All ATI DC-8s are configured as a combi.
They have last DC-8's in the world for PAX service.

I did mention Alaska. But my question is, why the restrictions in the first place?

Here again, U.S. based carriers.

Alaska and Aloha operate combi's. But they need a special waiver.

Why?
