Any Idea Where TWA Aicraft Will End Up?

Thu Jan 24, 2002 1:52 pm

I have been kinda curious where TWA's aircraft will all end up in the future. I know there with AA now and some are being painted in the TWA/AA hybrid colors, and now full AA colors. Obviously we know that the 757/767 are PW powered and AA's are not. So who will these aircraft most likely go to? Also, what about all of TWA's MD-80's? TWA has many of the most recent built MD-80 aircraft many being years newer than AA's. For some reason it seems AA wont keep those either as I have flown on a few of the hybrid colored aircraft and let me tell you, the paint job on the aicraft is horrible. Looks like AA had the cheapest work they could done. The 757's are all also very new aircraft. And lastly, the 717's. I have no idea where those will go. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks

DC-9s were all parked.
717s are being returned to Boeing- all of them gone by June.

American placed an order of 767s to replace TW's.

I don't know about the 757s. Originally, they were going to trade with United... after UA/US merged... as United had Pratt 757s and US has Rolls... they were going to swap... AA would give TW's to United, and UA would give US's to AA.... that's a lot of acronyms...

The hybrid scheme was indeed cheap- because AA knew it would only be months before TWA was removed and AA painted on in regular quality...

I think they are keeping the MD-80s. Indeed, some of them are well over a decade newer than AA's.

I miss TWA. Thank goodness I got to fly on them once...

TWA was the last airline to recieve MD-83s.

The last MD-83 built was delivered to TWA on December 28, 1999.

There are more than 20 MD-83s from TWA in the 1998-1999 delivery range.

These aircraft will be flying for quite a long time.

Boeing is aggressively marketing the TWA B717's. Some may end up with HAL, AirTran wiull probably pick up a few at bargain basement rates.

The 767-200's were going to Airborne Express for cargo mods. I think all of them have been received by Airborne. I'm noit sure where the TWA 767-300's are going to go.

AA will likely keep the MD-80 series planes after modifying them to AA standards.

Where oh where to send the TWA 757's? They share a commonality with NWA and Aeromexico's specs.

717s returning to Boeing & Pembroke in June.
757s probably will be flying with AA for awhile.
767s most likely to be parked/returned to lessors.
MD-80 fleet...one half to be retained by AA, other half returned to owners. Just my 2 cents worth. Regards.

TWA's 717's will go to Aloha-Hawaiian Airlines, replacing all remaining 737-200's on inter-island flights. Other 717 aircraft will end up with Midwest Express and possibly Vanguard Airlines, as well as some far east start up. The 757's will be acquired by some charter airline and maybe even Hawaiian/Aloha for transpacific flights from Hawaii to secondary US mainland markets. The 767-200's went to Airborne Express or Victorville. The few -300's will go on lease to US Airways to replace some aging 767-200ER's. That's just my two cents worth. The MD80's ain't going nowhere. AA wants them.

I heard that AA is keeping all of TWA's planes and most of TWA's workers based out of STL. AA only brings their MD-80's into STL; I have yet to see an AA 737 flying out of STL.

After reading these posts, I am trying to sort out the definates and speculations.....

717-200 - All 25(ish) being returned to Boeing by June.
757-200 - Fate Unknown
767-200 - Sold to Airborne Express
767-300 - Parked or Returned to Leassors (sp?)
MD-82/83 - All 120 (ish) being kept by AA
DC-9-30/50 - Parked or Returned

Please tell me which is fact and whats fiction.

Thanks,

N 7 5 7 T W

p.s. I think it is a mistake to return the 717, they are a great aircraft.

Fact...all 30 717s being returned.
Fact...all 27 757s being retained for the time being.
Fact...all 12 767-200s are out of service with AA.
Fact...all 18 DC-9s are out of service with AA.
Speculation...MD-80 fleet (103 ships) is being sorted out. Some have high lease payments which AA doesn't want to pay.
Speculation...9-10 767-300s probably parked/returning to lessors very soon. See Bill Harms website to get a better breakdown of TWA's fleet. Regards.

Is Vanguard really interested in the 717?

It makes sense for Vanguard to acquire some 717s. With the conversion of their fleet to MD products, adding the 717 to the stable is really a no-brainer. Not all of their markets can support a MD-80 or MD-87 flight, so something in the 100 seat range will be needed, and if they can get the funding to lease some when they become available, that would be a good business move, and they would trump Midwest Express in getting 717s before them.

the 717 might be very good for vanguard.... but can they afford them? Lease payments on new a/c are not cheap, espeicaly for airlines already in finnancial trouble.

It is good to see that some of the TWA PW4000 powered 767-300s are going to be leased by US Airways since they already operate PW4168 powered A330-300s.

I don't know that Vanguard would want 717's right now. They do not have the commonality with the MD80 series that some people think they do. Vanguard's 732s seat about 120, M80's about 130 and M87s about 115. Why downsize more to an aircraft that doesn't fit the fleet? Just my opinion.

Because the 717 operating cost is way less than the 737-200 and I think like 30% less than an MD-80/87. As for if Vangaurd can make the payments I dont know dont really follow up with them. Even though there just airplanes I wanna see TWA's jets go to good homes. It would be nice if AA keeps the TWA tail numbers on there aircraft so you can still tell which was a former TransWorld bird. So far they are even the ex-TWA aircraft painted in FULL AA colors still retain the TW tail numbers.
