Singapore Airlines Will Not Work With DAT

Thu Jan 24, 2002 10:13 pm

Contrary to earlier reports, Singapore Airlines manager for Belgium Mr. Andrew Yip Hon Mun announced that SQ is not interested in any participation in DAT. Different parties would like to attract SQ, using the new DAT/Virgin company as a European hub for the Asian airline. Singapore Airlines has been flying three times a week between Brussels and Singapore in 747 since 1979. At a certain point SQ even flew to New York, generating extra traffic out of Brussels. With the disappearance of Sabena, BIAC (the Brussels Airport Company) and DAT are looking for a new intercontinental airline partner to help feed and develop DAT's European network. SQ having been one of the possibilities.

In common with most intercontinental airlines, SQ views AMS as a much more viable hub than BRU. AMS is also easy for Belgian pax to get to - and there's no point in SQ diluting its traffic to/from there. Some AMS flights continue on to JFK.

I suspect higher yields at AMS is a factor?

Doesn't necessarily follow, A330DAT. Yields on BRU-LHR have always been higher than BRU-LGW even with the additional competition at LHR.

Not intended as a comparison, just an illustration.

A330DAT - why do you think that everyone wants to fly to/from LHR? Far more competition than there is at AMS!

Ceilidh, sometimes you really don't make ANY sense. AMS easy for Belgian pax to get to, compared to Brussels?? Should I even be answering this garbage??  Insane  Nuts

A330DAT considering that the majority of travellers (especially those travelling on business, according to figures produced by BIAC and BCAA) are Flemish, whilst BRU would be first choice there's not a major hassle to get to AMS and it's a lot easier than CDG, FRA or LHR, for example!

Ceilidh none of SQ's flights continue from AMS to JFK. Some do continue to EWR and ORD, the latter being temporarily suspended. I also suspect that you have never travelled from a Belgian town, let's say Antwerp, to AMS. Then you would know what a hassle it is. I fly sometimes to HKG with CX, this flight leaves in the afternoon. In order to get there on time you should leave Belgium and get around Rotterdam before the morning rush starts, as these peak hours last from dusk till dawn. AMS as an alternative for BRU if BRU is not an option, YES. But AMS replacing BRU, NO!
