Delta Shuttle In Atl?

Fri Jan 25, 2002 1:25 am

I was recently travelling through Hartsfield, you can see my trip report if you like and I saw at least two Delta Shuttle 737's there. I'm wondering why they were there. Do they go for maintenance? Charters? Equipment substitutions?

They are most likely used for extra capacity or weekend-only flights when frequencies on the shuttles are reduced over the weekend. I flew through ATL earlier in the month and saw a Shuttle as well.

they are probably there for maintance. since atl is the biggest maintance base for delta (i think) they were probably in for a day or 2 for maintance

They are primarily brought to ATL for maintenance and while in ATL can be pressed into service depending upon operational needs.

I see them everyday on my way to work. Some are parked by North MX, while others are being used for flights. Delta Shuttle has not resumed full service yet, so some of these aircraft are being used out of ATL in place of aircraft out of service.

Yes, some are being used for flights. Right now, I am looking into booking Delta 686 ATL-ORF this summer, and it would be on a Shuttle 738 (you can tell by the seat chart).

On January 3, 2002, I took my "journey" to Florida that was supposed to be on Delta. You can read all about it in my trip report posted here. Anyway, my DL flights to ATL and onward were cancelled due to the winter storm in the south. I was standing on the observation deck at CLE and I saw a DLX 737-200. I have never seen one at CLE before (at least of the DLX variety). I know they don't fly them here regularly, so it must have had something to do with the bad weather that day.

I know the Shuttle 738s have a one-cabin layout.

So what happens when a Shuttle 738 is placed on a mainline flight??? What does the airline do about the First Class pax? Or do they have those cool "change-upon-demand" seats like European airline planes do?

First class simply isn't sold on routes like ATL-MCO where they know the Shuttle a/c are to be subbed in on the weekends. If the sub is a surprise, First class just get the seats close to the front (no cabin divider, etc). Nice democratic arrangement...everybody happy.

I vaguely remember one time about 8 years ago flying ATL - LGA on a Delta Shuttle a/c. I don't recall whether that was the schduled a/c, but I remember getting in, and seeing all the nice leather seats. It was definately a tail engine a/c so I would imagine it was the 727 or MD80 (though I didn't think Delta used the MD80 as a shuttle)

If I payed for a first class seat, I'd be really annoyed if all I got was a seat near the front in a one class layout. I bet that doesn't go over very well.

If they do unexpectedly sub in equipment the First Classers can and will get money back if they ask.

I've seen Delta Express (in addition to Delta Shuttle) in ATL several times, although there is no scheduled service there, so the aircraft was probably just there for maintainence.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

F/C pax will get an involuntary downgrade coupon which they can use in the future by booking a y/c ticket and using this coupon for confirmed f/c on a future flight.

The Shuttle fleet previously had 16 a/c. Nonstop service between DCA and BOS was discontinued leaving an excess of a few a/c (3 or 4). The planes rotate through Shuttle ops and Mainline ops. At least 2 are used on weekends for extra capacity to MCO and TPA.
