NW 747 Makes Emergency Landing In China

US jetliner in emergency landing

BEIJING - An American Northwest Airlines passenger jet was forced into an emergency landing in China after a threatening note was found on board, the official

Xinhua news agency reported.

Flight NWA 087 to Beijing from Detroit made the unscheduled stop at Tianjin airport, about 160 km from Beijing, at around 7 pm local time, said the agency.

Northwest Airlines' Tokyo office reported the threatening letter to the Chinese authorities two hours earlier, at around 5 pm local time, the agency said.

Chinese police were said to have searched the plane but uncovered nothing suspicious.

No details about the note were given but an investigation is under way. --AFP

If they could have made an emergency landing in Tianjin, why not just continue on to Beijing, since it's so close anyways?

Tianjin Airport, is only 68.0 nm away from Beijing airport, and furthermore, on the likely route from DTW, they would have approached Beijing FIRST!
