Photo Search Engine

Sun Jan 27, 2002 7:14 am

I just came up with a new idea for the photo search engine, at the homepage of http://www.airliners.net.

I was wondering if Johan would be willing, and what you guys thought if he added an option to search by city. All of the photos have a location box, and he could list maybe the top 100 or 200 cities. It would make it easier for finding pictures at a particular city.

What do you think?

He needs to update the airline list and add AirDo and Air Canada Tango (and a few others) to the list

why don't you just type in the name of the city? It'll come out.

Yes, A330DAT, you are right, but would you like to type in the airplane or the airline everytime you search for a specific photo? It would not be difficult to add a "city search" option...so go for it Johan!

That's so weird...I was thinking about this about 25 minutes ago before I even saw this post! Big thumbs up

I think it's a good idea.

Thanks for the positive support guys!

A330DAT, yes, I thought of this, however, like 9V-SPF said, it would be much easier to have a tab for Cities, and I don't think it would be too hard for Johan to implement it.

Great Idea,

It gives you the option to search for lets say landing gears of an Air Canada 744 at YYZ. Something that you can't do now. As there are more and more pictures being down loaded, more advance searches are required.

Maybe we should come up with a list for him to better help. I think that the three letter codes should be there too....

Just me trying to help,

He should make a separate search box that will search just the location field of the photos. That would be the easiest to implement.

Also, that would let you search for the airport name, city, or 3 or 4 letter code, since all are included in the location field.

I have tried a few times I type keyword "KORD" or "Chicago" it doesn't work well to pick all those photos. It picks up three letter "CHI" as a PK-CHI aircraft's id. I have no idea why doesn't pick a whole word "Chicago" for photo. It would be a good idea add cities location.

We would need a search box that searches specifically the location field.

Yeah,

So it could be a pull down tab, like the three currently there already (Aircraft Type, Airline, and Category).

He could list the airports by city name, and then have the code Brackets ( ) next to it.

What do you guys think?

Do an advanced search by location. It works.

Fallingeese - Advanced search is good, but significantly slower (especially if you only have a modem connection, and have to scroll through several pages to find what location - or any other parameter - you are looking for). I think the idea of having a location selection option on the main page is a good idea, myself.

Maybe its taking it too far, but a date selectioner might be nice also - say 3 menus, so you could select day month and year. How about it? Or will it complicate the main page too much?

I think I'm faster typing the 3-letter code, or the name of the airport, than scrolling down a huge list with airport names.

You can already search by location, have a look at http://www.airliners.net/advsearch. You make a search of airline, a/c, location, photographer and much more.
I think it would be hard to search for a single city. Someone would be annoyed and say, why is city A included and not city B and so on. However, searching by countries would be nice Smile.

I suggested Johan some weeks ago to add a fourth search box, e.g. "Keywords #2", and he told me that he's considering it and will implement it in the next future.

A search box would be so much easier for Johan to make and for us to use. A pulldown menu with the locations would be huge, increase the download time for the page, and take a long time to develop.

Take it from a guy who develops websites and databases.  Big grin
