Remeber Alasta.nl? They're Getting Sued!

Mon Jan 28, 2002 7:17 am

Well well. I thought it would end, but not like this. The rankings on the website were far from accurate!

Anyway, here's SkyTrax's press release

----
Beware imitation Star Ranking !

27 January 2002
We would advise our visitors that we have today commenced legal action against a Dutch individual for unauthorised copying and use of Skytrax material. The person had set up a site "claiming" to Star Rank airlines, using the Skytrax data, copying Skytrax flight and product reviews, photos and much more.

People say "imitation is the greatest form of flattery" - not however when it is cheap imitation, deliberately designed to mislead and trick the customer. As you would expect, we shall provide updates on the closure of this fake Ranking programme and website.

To the airliners.net forum.

I just found this thread on the forum.

http://www.alasta.nl is our site and Skytrax is not playing the game fare.

Let me explain:

First of all the entire claim, that everything came from Skytrax isn't true. They claim pictures that are supposed to be made for Skytrax exclusively. I just had to mail them the links were those pictures came from and only than they said ok your wright. The problem was that I used the term Star Ranking. Star Ranking with my own data. My data wasn't the same as Skytrax, but only the term Star Ranking was.

I am flying myself for our own researches and use our own data. Layout was a lot similar but not the same. The term Star Ranking was trade marked they said, but they didn't say so on their website. After those problems with us the put TM behind their Star Ranking. (this is what they should do on forehand)

What I can say is that Skytrax doesn't want any other company to rank the airlines. Bad Luck because we do and still keep on doing that.

I have renewed our site and checked everything, noting is from Skytrax (not even the stars and arrow). They have a different size than the ounces on the Skytrax site.
(it’s hard to see but it sure is) There are also flight reviews on my site, but they are mailed by the writers to us and not stolen from any forum

We have a perfect site and no, Skytrax is not going to force legal action against us.
If something is trade marked, you should say so on your site, now they do.

So they have learned something from this problem.

Our ranking is named ATC Star Ranking.
So that is for Alasta Travel Consultancy Star Ranking.

I hope everything is clear now.

I have to agree that your star rankings of some airlines are incredibly inaccurate when taken on a realistic basis.

You appear to be ranking airlines based on single trips - for example, Sabena, one of the world's worst airlines in terms of service has/had a high ranking whereas some of the world's best carriers had a poor one.

There seems to be no defined and moderated scientific basis for the ratings given.

For someone holding themselves out as a 'consultant' this is highly unethical and unprofessional to say the least.

Sabena, one of the world's worst airlines in terms of service

In terms of management only, service was average both on short and long hauls. Based on +50 return flights experience.

Ceilidh,

We are flying with 3 persons all around the World.
We base our rankings on Check in service, Business Lounge, Aircraft Seat, Cabin Service, Catering, Inflight Entertainment and Inflight Magazine.

Ofcourse there are always bad flights, and yes we make only one flight. But we always say, the service should always be the same, and if a service is bad and we are onboard you have bad luck.

F.E. You pay $5,000.00 for a Business Class trip and the seat in broken, inflight entertainment system is down, you receive a bad service and you find a stone ( i had it onces ) in your food you would felt your self ripped off or nor ?.

Sabena has a very comfortable seat, my service was perfect, was even invited to sit in the cockpit when we landed on JFK, Food was good and the inflight entertainment system worked perfect, check in was good that's why they are ranked with 4 stars.

Lufthansa has as service which is very good all the way through. I have flown with them for 6 times and necer had a complain that is why 5 stars.

Your saying: ÿour star rankings (ATC star rankings ) ofsome airlines are incredibly inaccurate when taken on a realistic basis.

We have surveyed them on a realistic basis and I sure know that some people do think otherwise. That is the same with the ranking of Skytrax.

Without advertsing but in the context of this story, I trying to set up a voting system where the people can vote for the best airline, but also can register complains. So the ATC Ranking will be the number of votes for an airline minus the complains and our own surveys. It is hard to set up, because you will have to double check everything but I hope it will be helping the traveller.

Singapore Air, are you saying it's inaccurate because at least ATC puts SQ at a 4 star rating instead of the usual 5 star rating? Come on, not everybody likes SQ as much as you do

Well it appears to me that ATC lacks academic integrity in the way its studies are done. I can tell you with full confidence that if ever an undergraduate submits a research paper based on the experiences of three people, it's so going to be thrown out of the door. For any study to be even slightly representative, you'll need a proper sample size representative of the general flying population, I'd take a census as the most accurate, but that's quite difficult, so a sample size of at least 150 is necessary. Then you'll need to test for things like researcher bias, reliability, etc. All of these were not done.

IMHO, to call the rankings a study, is a grand insult to academia and academics all around.

Boy does some one have a lot of info to learn. Firstly you have to prove to Skytrak (not us) about the goings on so save you search for them. Also I would not discuss the legal matters in a forum with a bunch of kids, infact I would not even post anything about your organization in any forum; just observe.

Ceilidh,

Do you - as an infamous fantasy airline CEO - really intend to talk about realistic and not realistic issues??? Must be an early 1st April joke, he?!

Skytrax is bigger but not better 9v-sve !!!!!!

I have spoken to Skytrax people and I think they get paid for the surveys by the airlines.

We don't get any money from the airlines so we must be more accurate than Skytrax.

That is my idea of this issue, but I keep on following the replies.

What do you mean you're more accurate because you don't get paid?

No what I said before.
If a survey flight is bad they get a bad ranking.

The quality and service should always be the same and it should not matter when or where your flying from.

A 3 star Michellin restaurant should also keep their quality the same. This is the same for the airline industrie.

If the inspector fropm Michellin is checking the food and service and it isn't good you lose your star.

We are accurate enough to work on that same base.

If people pay a survey agency, you will never be independed enough I think to create a correct ranking.

Singapore_Air I read the thread and the reply by Skippy777. I ask you on which bases you say that the rankings of ATC are far from accurate. If any ranking is inaccurate it's Skytrax rating of SQ (or did you mean their website when you said something about inaccurate rankings). It just don't add up. Giving 5 stars to an airline of which you say are not a leader. Moreover it's totally against their own definition of a 5 star airline.

In short Skytrax has rated an airline 5 stars whilist it shouldn't have 5 stars according to their own standards. If you don't believe this I suggest you go to skytrax website and read the definition and the commentary of SQ.

Regards
Laurens

Thanks Li for explaning.

I like SQ as well, but I don't think they are that good anymore to get 5 stars.
