Why would it be necessary to make an emergency landing in this case? Would a pillow stuck in the door affect the pressurisation of the plane?

(And if so, why didn't they return to Taipei immediately?)

They would not be able to pressurize the cabin!

You could pressurize, just probably made a lot of wind noise!

Reminds me of when a CO 737 made an unscheduled landing in ROC because a seatbelt got stuck in the door and it wouldn't pressurize.

You'd think they'd check for these things before takeoff.

Laugh out loud You would think they'd check for that stuff before the a/c left the gate. Didn't the FA find the obstructed door was harder to close then the rest?

the F/A's usually dont have the upper deck doors open for any reason at all, thus resulting in no need to close them. However F/A's do sit right by the doors during take off and landing. Usually when they do their walk by checks they make sure everything is looking good. Surprized this wasnt noticed. I am really surprized this happend! I have sat at the emergency exit once on the upper deck this past summer and recall the doors location not to close in proximity to the seat. I cant see how a pillow ended up there!

As the upper doors are not even used, when did the pillow get into that position ??

DOORs sometimes make the flight fatal.
I remember the first hull loss accident of DC 10
was the Turkey airlines' one with cargo door's
burst because of incomplete shut.

The Upper Deck doors are opened from time to time by maintainence for whatever reason (ventilation, etc.). The seats actually are and have always been in very close proximity to the doors (the footrests block the doors during flight), and a pillow in the door can very easily be mistaken for a pillow laying on the floor (where the majority of passengers put their pillows/blankets for takeoff/landing).

Assuming that the upper deck doors was open for ventilation or whatever, it amazes me that the person who closed it did not remove the pillow that obviously must have been laying on the floor. Even more the crew preparing the aircraft for boarding of passengers should notice a pillow laying on the floor! It is actually not that hard to locate a pillow by the upper deck emergency doors.... but maybe United FA´s don´t check aircrafts before bording of passengers? Scary from both a service and safety point of view.

Cheers

Funny, just a pillow. They sure spent a lot of money on that little pillow.

well the plane did leave taipei... prehaps China Airlines ground crew was working in this plane before departure and since they like to neglect many important issues why not a pillow in the door? FLY777UAL when I said the door is not too close in proximity to the seat I was comparing it more to that of emergency exit to door locations on smaller aircraft.

Gee-- I've been wondering where all our pillows have gotten too, anyway! Now I know: they're out the door!

I'd love to know just where the pillow was and how much of it was visible in the cabin and outside. That really should have been caught by someone. Our Taipei-based Flight Attendants know that -400 like the backs of their hands, as that's all they see! I have to think the pillow was somewhat hidden from view.

At LAX the 744s that sit out between arrival trime from AKL/SYD and departure later that night (while unloading cargo, undergoing maintenence etc) often have all the doors open, including the upper level.

I figgured it was just to air out the plane. If they have a similar practice in TPE maybe the incident occured then.

BTW, what is with that animation, it's awful.

It's true, that animation is in bad taste. We just lost one of our pilots in the same way, and seeing that animation just doesn't provoke a smile.....although I'm not sure it's meant to. What IS it doing there?

They couldn't have checked the pressurization of the plane on the ground... as my understanding has it, there are switches on the gear struts, and when the gear is on the ground, the plane's pressure equalizing door thingies open, thus depressurizing the plane. Correct me if I'm wrong
