B747 Upgrade?

Thu Jan 31, 2002 2:56 am

Lets say a startup airline wants to set up some trans pacific routes. They opt to buy B747-200, since maybe they are cheap now a days or there are a lot out there like BA's 747's. They probably have a price tag between 8-12 Million dollars. My question is, would it be economically viable to upgrade the aircraft, with new avionics (like what KL did with there 743) add PTV's maybe? Also the thought of having blended wings like on the 737, and added fuel tank in the rear stabilizers like on the 744, and maybe re engine them with 744 type engines?

what do you guys think will this be economically viable?
or is it cheaper to lease a brand new aircraft or buy a brand new one?

you have to take into account the number of hours / cycles on th frame - probably not viable
