AA Is Furious At CNN

Thu Jan 31, 2002 7:16 am

Didn't take long for them to react. American Airlines is steaming a demanding an apology, according to Miami's local FOX affiliate, at CNN for publishing a story (see "No more A300s trans-Atlantic") stating that they were ending trans-Atlantic A300 flights due to the November crash, when the fact is this retirement of A300s over the Atlantic was announced months ago.

CNN should be sued for something like that. They are putting fear in passenger's minds where there is no need for it. AA has gone through enough last year, and the story by CNN is no help.

Looks like CNN.com pulled it's story about this from it's site. It was there this morning.

Yeah, I saw this story on CNN this morning and thought what???????? This is completely false reporting! I am sick on the media which seems to be waging war against the aviation industry. This was planned to happen, for the A300's to be pulled from trans-Atlantic. Too bad they are still flying from the East Coast to the Carribean. There's really no difference and why that would be done for any safety reasons has no basis. 10 pilots switching, wow, big deal, out of 400+ A300 pilots, thats no story at all. Maybe CNN should've looked at AA's news releases.

FOR RELEASE: Thursday, May 10, 2001
AMERICAN ORDERS NEW BOEING AIRCRAFT

FORT WORTH, Texas – American Airlines today announced it has placed an order for 15 new GE-powered Boeing 767-300ER widebody aircraft. The 190-seat aircraft, to be delivered to American in 2002 and 2003, will further the airline’s strategy of simplifying its fleet. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.

Some of the new aircraft will replace TWA’s nine Pratt & Whitney-powered 767s, which are not common to American’s existing fleet of 79 GE-powered 767s. The remainder of the new 767 order will replace American’s three-class Airbus A300-600s on North Atlantic routes, allowing American to standardize its transatlantic services on Boeing 767 and 777 aircraft. The Airbus aircraft will be refitted with two-class interiors and deployed to serve American’s Caribbean and Latin American markets – missions for which the A300 is ideally suited, from both a range and cargo capacity standpoint.

"The standardization of our 767 aircraft and the simplification of our transatlantic fleet to just two aircraft types will yield tremendous efficiencies for American," said Tom Horton, American’s senior vice president of finance and chief financial officer.

The redeployment of the A300s will free a number of 757 and 737 narrowbody aircraft to move into American’s domestic system. Moving the smaller Boeings into the domestic system will give American added scheduling flexibility and will ultimately reduce the need to purchase additional narrowbody aircraft.

American currently operates a fleet of 719 aircraft. This year, it will take delivery of 55 new Boeing aircraft, while retiring 39 aircraft. TWA operates 178 aircraft.

Cactus- i completely agree with you on your LGB Photo comment.

As good as CNN is, they need to stop making up stories like this. They could announce that AA is pulling the A300 off trans-atlantics, but they should have noted that it was scheduled before the crash and had already been in the plans.

Boy, that's weird...

I read that very article and it stated (albeit in the 3rd or 4th paragraph) that the A300 transatlantic phase-out WAS slated pre-crash, and how larger jets were now available.

Funny how we see what we want to.

Yeah, I saw this story on CNN this morning about 6 Pacific... I barely caught the end of it, but I got the same feeling that this was due to the crash.

Nice job, CNN.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the American A300 fleet grounded.... lets order some more 767s.

RE: "Sky Nazis"

Thu Jan 31, 2002 8:57 am

The term "Sky Nazi" is a 'term of endearment' bestowed on AA by other airline pilots. It's a pilot thing. It has nothing to do with the events of the day or AA protecting their image. Everybody in the industry knows, including AA pilots, that when you are talking about the "Sky Nazis", you are talking about AA.

Also, American Eagle has been nicknamed the "Hitler Youth" in reference to the name bestowed on their big brother AA. Many airlines have been given such nicknames. They also call Southwest the "Borg"...

LGB, you're waaaaaaaaay out of line here. AA is definitely a victim of irresponsible reporting, designed to capitalize on the sensationalism of the loss of an A-300.

AA did a big mistake by retiring the 717s and not ordering more

A little bit of good news to A^A fans who wanted to get back at CNN:

FOX News Channel beat CNN in ratings for the first time in January, taking over CNN's 15 year record. Now CNN is second.

The fact that Fox News beat CNN is probably one of the reasons that CNN is now running more sensationalist pieces. As I said yesterday in a separate post on this topic, stories (whether real or invented) sell viewership more than facts.

One question I have is how did CNN find out this piece of information? I'm sure they weren't sitting there pouring through AA's flight schedule and AA didn't make a public announcement about it. I mean, it would be one thing for someone on the website to find it because, heck, people on here nearly memorize them and are very aware of certain airlines or airport's ops.

What I'm saying is someone had to tip CNN off about this event and provide them with some fuel for their fire. Most likely someone who doesn't like AA or Airbus. What about that group of pilots that are against flying the A300 and calling for a grounding? Do you think this was some propaganda they fed the media with? maybe.....But to do what good? Hurt AA and Airbus at any rate. I agree CNN has really gone downhill since this past summer. When they made their changeover to their new formaton CNN Headline News in August they sunk to a new low. Sensationalist garbage mostly now. I can't stand how their anchors pretend to be so dumb, or either they are, or how they try to dumb down their newscast to the stupid people.

I wouldn't put too much stock into what is reported by journalists on the news; they almost always read more into what is happening than is actually the case.
