Midway Island Airfield To Close

Thu Jan 31, 2002 1:13 pm

I heard the company that operates the Midway Island airfield is closing up shop and moving out.

Does anyone know if this waypoint is considered a "suitable airport" for transpac ETOPS purposes? If so, are there other options near enough to Midway to comply with the suitability issue?

I know Air NZ isn't happy about this, due to the fact that if Midway is closed, ETOPs regulations will force them to reroute their LAX-bound 763, adding flight time.

Hmmm....this also means that Aloha Airlines will forced to suspende it's 1 weekly flight to Midway Island from Honolulu.

I know the military are talking about closing Johnston Atoll which is used as an alternate field.
Midway is used as an alternate for flights such as LAX-NRT, HNL-GUM etc as it's northwest of Hawaii.
Air New Zealand doesn't go near it.  Smile

I heard this in the news here in Hawai'i, and I was disappointed. I am in college, and wanted to take a summer course out on the island to get a few college credits. I guess this is a good thing in a way since it will save some birds from becoming propeller fodder!!

So does that mean they are losing all air service? If that is the case, how are they going to bring in supplies and such?

Is Phoenix Air still runing the shop out there?

They used to send their learjets through Cold Bay, Alaska on the way down there.

Draw a triangle with its corners at (31.694307N, 176.499516W), (33.909868N, 178.932671W), and (35.480483N, 173.168067W). That's the area that is more than 1167 nm (i.e. 180 minutes at 389 knots) from Shemya, Wake, and Honolulu. (What is Shemya's status, anyway?) The "great circle" from HNL to Guam or Narita doesn't pass through there, but HNL-Sapporo would just clip the corner. So with 180-min ETOPS you can manage without Midway-- but still nice to have.

I thought the US Navy still operates the airstrip where sometimes USAF transport planes operating in the Pacific make routine stops. Don't forget that in June of this year is the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Midway, which was the turning point in the Pacific in WW2. In this battle we sank four of the six Japanese aircraft carriers that took part in the Pearl Harbor attack.

Shemya is on caretaker status. A native corperation maintains the facilities out there.

The US Navy has zero to do with Midway now except for the ongoing cleanup of wildlife habitat. As I understand it, the Midway Phoenix Corp is blaming the National Wildlife Service for putting too many restrictions on their eco-tour operations. Something along the lines of a visitor needing to have a wildlife official supervising them at all times. Hopefully some type of agreement can be reached between the two parties, however things are not looking very good at this point.
